Let's just say that there was no drop in speed or gear on the link road

Yeah it turned out pretty well

I glued it on to the standard Td5 molded rubber mat in the footwell and then directly on the seat box and transmission tunnel

Yep held top gear all the way up no problem. Sits at about 1800 rpm at 50 so plenty of torque

trailer weighs 800kg empty and I reckon there is a couple of tonnes in the ramp

Would have done more that 50mph for sure but that's the limit when towing

giving me ideas that is, I think my rubber mat thing has seen better days, so looks like I may have to replace the full smash.

One thing I noticed is you are missing the metal plates that goes on the sides of the bulkhead, where the door switches screw in, might be how you took the photo. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

But as you say, hardly know it's there really. The tri axle trailer is so stable and with lots of power on tap it sits there lovely on the motorway. I had the cruise control on mostly just effortless even up the hills. Like the bit up out of Bristol where it is four lanes. Held 60 up there no problem at all

60 on the motorway is the limit for towing

And yes, with cruise control and the seats etc it is very comfy. Not too comfy though - no risk of falling asleep

Made good progress on the rear step this evening. Too dark for pictures but hopefully I'll get the edges tidied up tomorrow and then I have to decide if I'm painting or powder coating
