Well, there was a bit morerust/rot than I first thought hence it took a bit more time. However the results are’nt too bad, I replaced the hinge bolts as well when I put the door back on. Also fitted a puma door look as well so I can fit the central locking actuator that’s been in thegarage since I did the other doors. I was going to fit a one piece skin, but thought the four piece one might be easier to handle when fitting it to the door frame, plus the orginal skin was four piece.

Ok, so I finally got round to having the door painted, I did think about having the complete back end painted so the door matched in better, however it the end the wallet ruled. However the match isn’t too bad considering the orginal paint is 20 odd years old
Click image to enlarge I also fitted a Mantec spare wheel holder, which was a pleasure to fit with all holes lining up first time! Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge When rebuilding the door back up I bonding the rear glass in place, as previously there was no sealant and it was letting water in hence the rot. I also kept spending and also fitted a mud rear interior panel as it had a diy chequer plate one previously and with fitting a actuator for the central locking I needed the clearance. 1999 300TDI 110 CSW BMW 3.0 1972 VW Beetle 1200 2002 Dax Rush 3.9 V8 2012 Audi A3 tdi 2020 Renault Kangoo electric |

My rear door had practically split in two! if we had decided to re skin the door like this, it would have dropped to pieces, the frame was well bent in some places. I was looking at putting a later door on, some point this year or maybe next year. But with it been bbqd that plan went out of the window sadly.
colour match looks good mind, if it was red, I recon it would have been a pain in the arse Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

Like the new door! Procta beat me to it by saying that the frame on his rear door was completely knackered - mine too. There was just no way it would have handled the dismantling process without falling apart completely. I once had a tourist come up to me and ask if I was washing the car in salt water! Which is effectively what we do up here for 4 months of the year with all the salt on the roads. I was also going to comment too that the colour match was good, but that in red it would have been worse.... and then Procta beat me to that as well. My 100, in Portofino red is so faded and dry looking that any new paint stands out like a sore thumb. So, while my wallet would definitely be happier if I weren't doing this, I'm having to get the car resprayed completely. Though that's after 5 new doors rather than just the tailgate. Me and my mate tried a few times to strengthen the frame again, it was well bent, I think the weight of the spare wheel had practically killed the frame. We tried to bent the full works back into shape but it was game over. Laugh was when the car was BBQed the rear door frame survived and is still there at the finial resting place. It’s been a while since I updated, haven’t had the call to do any major work the last 12months. Just redone the rust protection on the chassis using dintrol. This time I removed the springs and shocks also to make it a bit easier, plus the power coating was peeling on the coil springs so I sorted that at the same time.
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Also noticed the rust was weeping through on the front shock absorber turrets - they weren’t the best when I initially bought it , so I ordered a set of the Gwynn Lewis galvanised ones and stuck them on when I rust treated the front. Just got the rust to sort on the front bumper - still, so I ma6 go for one of the galvanised versions and paint is black. Also mulling over a change of wheels, quite like the banded version of the rostyles, or maybe vbs nemesis? 1999 300TDI 110 CSW BMW 3.0 1972 VW Beetle 1200 2002 Dax Rush 3.9 V8 2012 Audi A3 tdi 2020 Renault Kangoo electric |

I would love to change your way of thinking about keeping it 100% but only you can make that decision
Yes they are great to work on and the sense of achievement when it's all back together and then you can say " i did that " 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper. Clayton. |
