Bonnet Keeps Suddenly Springing Up
Hi All!

Recently had my viscous fan replaced now it is nice and strong. But I think it's too strong as every now and then the bonnet pops up from lock position with no one operating the bonnet release! Shocked

I was told to adjust the 2 rubber stoppers lower to help prevent this, it helps the bonnet stay down longer but it eventually still pops up again! The 2 stoppers are now adjusted really low and I don't want add to the strike damage that the ends of the bonnet have already done. Is there something I'm missing? Am I adjusting them the correct way? The bonnet ended up in a smirk at one point! Big Cry

I was told that you could adjust the post with the spring in the center of the bonnet but I'm not sure how to do that and in what direction I should adjust it to. Question

I've also sprayed the receiving end with lubrication as that was suggested together with the 2 rubber stops.

Ideas? What is the preferred adjustment?

Sounds like the bonnet catch itself is sticking, damaged or our of alignment. I'd give it a good dowsing in spray grease. Lock and release the bonnet a few times to get the grease worked. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

My Austin-Rover mini did that after I had the bonnet off. I made a few adjustments to the striker plate as the thing on the bonnet with the pin/spring was not going into it properly. If it is lined up ok (remove grill and look from underneath) then that pin/spring arrangement on the bonnet itself may need a bit of adjustment (i.e. tightening to compress the spring)

Its the same setup as on the mini. 1953 80"

Thanks for the tip, MR_JAMES!

Will take a look while I'm changing out the VCV.

Get someone to hold the release handle open
The pin on the bonnet should pass cleanly though the exact centre of the catch.
Adjust the catch on the bonnet and slam panel until you achieve this
You may even have to adjust the bonnet hinges too if required
Then look at the catch, the ,gate, should be full across when closed, fully open when pulled, adjust cable to get this correct
Then adjust the centre pin out almost as much as it can go
Adjust the rubber buffers to give clearance on the wings
Then tighten the centre pin until it removes most of the free play and the bonnet is secure

Also worth checking the end of the pin attached to the bonnet to see if it's worn.Could be a sign of someone being under the bonnet a lot doing repairs Laughing

Just to update everyone, I had some work done and told them about my little problem, they adjusted the bit on the bonnet with the spring. Used a spanner and a flat head screwdriver. After the adjustment, bonnet stays down now. Thumbs Up
