Having just had one fitted, this was one of the topics that came up. Rod suggested that if you are going to leave it in gear then this should be done after the engine has been switched off - just slot it in. This way, it should come back into neutral just as easily when the time comes. I'm not sure how your vacuum pump operates, but if it is indeed electrical then I see no reason why an override switch couldn't be fitted. A vacuum reservoir is fitted as part of the kit, but not sure how effective this would be after a prolonged period of engine off. Drop Rod an email - roderick@johnbarry.co.uk - he will be delighted to help you in any way he can.

The vacuum pump is not electrical, it needs the engine running to power it.
When I spoke to them about leaving it in gear, the answer was basically that you could but it wasn't recommended. Fitting the booster makes the clutch heavier than normal so once the vacuum has all leaked then it will be difficult to get out of gear. If you put it in gear after the engine has stopped, that's fine unless the car then settles on to the transmission (because the handbrake has slipped). Given that's why you tend to leave it in gear, that doesn't sound like a great solution to me. |

And that is why I can't fit one. I had hoped the pump was electrical.... Another plan required then it seems! V8 90...WIP

Pretty sure you can select gears or put it in natural without the clutch when the engine is off anyway?

Park the car on a steep slope, and i find that the transmission is easily tight when i return to it...not done this in my new 2.2 but certainly in other LRs V8 90...WIP

It'd only be the first press that had a lower level of assistance surely? And unless the thing has sat for months there will still be vacuum stored in the servo unit (assuming it has a non-return valve like the brake one), so the assistance will be at least partially there anyway.
Would have thought that you could get by for that one push required to take it out of gear into neutral, then once you've started the engine the next push to put it back into first would be fully servo assisted - as would all the subsequent ones. |

my understanding is that the first push without the booster providing assistance is mega hard. much harder than standard from other posts. and the redbooster people say it can damage the system if used unboosted. V8 90...WIP
