TC - Stick me down for a Hannibal if we're going to do this.
Plenty of people praise the Hannibal and I'm confident it will do the job (Manning up my USW!). Not sure if I'd even bother with the coating, can always get it coated by a local specialist in the future if it starts to look cr@p. Most important thing for me would be light weight, low noise and good Aero, keep the MPG. Access Ladder also. OoI - does anyone know if the expedition rack (like one on the 90 in the top right corner) could carry a roof tent? guessing it can't because of sides? I like the look of them and probably lighter than both Hannibal and Patriot... Ken.... |

Well I always looked at the Hannibal with the view of a Hannibal roof tent and a-wing, I know a few people that have the Hannibal racks and haven't had any problems.
All that said I would rather pump my money in the British economy rather than the south African but the weight is a big factor especially when I don't plan on altering the suspension just yet and I love the idea of a black anodised rack over powder coated. Now I can see being able to make alterations to your vehicle in the field is a good thing but how much damage can you really do to the rack? As the patriot rack is bolted is there any issues with the bolts coming loose/going missing??? Russell Russell 2011MY 110 XS USW Black |

Your welcome brendan
I honestly thought the weight would be more than that. I got the Patriot for a good price, I had to make my own altertions to the legs as these were protype legs to go with a particular roof tent. The rack only goes on for my adventures then off again as I am not constantly able to live the life of an Raulph Finnes Therefore putting it on and taking it off is pain with the weight and I personally find the difference of vehicle charateristics between having it on are noticable. Having the rack on also always me into even less carparks too As for repairs in the field, and I have 1% overland experience compared to brendan, most things I have read maintain a steel rack, like a brownchurch are best, for the obvious reasons of being able to weld etc, but all personal choices I suppose. Last time I took the rack off it had the roof tent on it too, used my inlaws Barn, set up block and tackle on a roof joist and used my winch to take the whole lot off in one go, will do that again when i go to using it again |

I use an electric hoist to lift roof tents/rack on and off. Only slight problem is getting centre of gravity right. Ratchet straps there can help as easier to adjust. Just take some time over it.
Steel racks v welded ali racks. Probably easier to find a welder for steel in the bush then ali Have used a Patriot rack , carry some allen keys spanners and a few spare bolts. All three types of racks have advantages and disadvantages, steel tends to be cheaper but not so easy to walk on unless boarded out. Ali slats running front to back are preferable to those running sideways. Welded v mecanno set?? If just want to carry a roof tent why not 3 roof bars? Lighter, cheaper and easier to fit. If you decide you don't like a Patriot rack stick it on ebay and you stand a reasonable chance of getting most if not all your money back. Personally I am not a big fan of roof racks/tents for my own use, preferring ground tents and all my stuff inside the 110. However different people have different needs/wants Brendan |

Both great racks, i just love the fact that the patriot is bomb proof, had mine for 4 years, originall purchased for the DC and then altered for the CSW...highly recomended
There is not that much in it weight wise and i never take mine off....but i do have a fuel card! You cannot teach stupid people to do clever things |

I have 2 Hannibal racks 110 and 130. Both carry loads of kit every day ladders, pipes, pumps, steel work etc etc. And both have been to Morocco loaded to the gunnel's driven across endless corrugated roads at high speed. I have never had issues with either.
Click on pictures to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The Hannibal rack for the 130 DCHCPU has no support from the back of the cab to the two rear supports. In standard form there are two hefty shaped box section legs. As J-Lo has a big back end the standard supports would not fit, so I made my own ally supports (circled in red below) that bolt direct to the top of the rear cover. Click image to enlarge Even though the rack is not supported (see below) you can see from the pictures above there are no sagging problems. Click image to enlarge I'm not slagging Patriot racks off here, just saying that from my own experience the Hannibal is light and will do the job 130's have feeling's as well you know |

I'm just about to buy a Hannibal 2.8m rack for my 110 USW - so would be interested in a group discount. I had in mind the type where a small stanless/ally table slides underneath the rack - and therefore not in the truck. Bit more weight up top admittedly but at least will have a decent surface for the field kitchen (or fixing the truck!!)
I intend to kit out with Hannibal RTT and side awning too.....good to get a discount there as well Put me down for a Hannibal - but need to be quick as I want for the Spring Nene have given me some pricing and I was just about to put a chaser into D44 for prices |

To back up AndrewS re Hannibal, I had one on my last 90 hard top and abused it for many years without the slightest sign of fatigue or failure.
I bought it second hand and after I finished using it I sold it for the same price I paid for it, the same couldn't be said for the Land Rover it was attached to |

How much are they charging you for the table? Just had a look on Devon 4x4's website and for all that delivered (providing you've be priced for the 2.4m awing) is only £14.2 less with out the table. Just had a look at first four off road and they are £36 cheaper than nene without the table. Russell 2011MY 110 XS USW Black |

LR say max weight on a 110 roof is 75KG - that includes any roof rack weight Think it's safe to say it will take a lot more I've always tried to keep my Landies as light as possible, I nearly bought a steering guard once until I picked it up and felt the weight of the thing - landies do enough MPG as it is..............I adhere to the mountaineering ethos of keeping weight light and low, just take what you really need. We always kipped in the back of mine, it saved on frigging around with tents and and it's the best place to be with regards to security |

I am sure that Hannibal racks are fine racks just like Patriot racks.
Yes there will be those people who think Hannibal racks are the bees knees others will think the same of Patriot racks. This sort of thread should be (and is) a constructive thread to help people decide what rack is best for them Many 4x4 items are offered for sale with limited or poor information, don't get me going about lights/jump leads etc. Anyway back to roof racks. Yes Patriot are remiss for not publishing the weights of their racks. Today I weighed a Patriot D2 2.5m rack without the luggage rail. Weight was 47.8 kg according to the bathroom scales down at the lockup.
So add a fifth of the weight to the Hannibal rack to compensate for its shorter length and it would be 42kg So in round terms the Patriot rack is about 6 kg or 15% heavier then the Hannibal. Can that be applied across the range of racks??? HTH people Brendan |
