Following almost a full day driving in the rain I have required a rusty brown stain on the passenger side of the bulkhead and bonnet. It looks suspiciously like it has emanated from the passenger side wiper spindle. Any suggestions as to the cause and what needs to be done to stop a recurrence?

I'm amazed that much stainng just from one days driving. How would I go about forcing grease in? Does this mean there is water in the wiper gearbox? If so I'll replace it. I always like a challenge!

There should be a rubber boot over the base of the spindle, you can try filling that with grease to see if it keeps the water away from the base. Mines done this before I changed them, but the boot was missing from one side. I done a full write up on the change over, not difficult, just time consuming.

Mine looked like that for a few months, then the nearside one seized up on the motorway which was lovely!
As said above, not a difficult job, just time consuming and awkward, an assistant with small hands an excellent memory will pay dividends when you come to reassemble. Chris |

Could this also be the reason for a few drips of water on the passenger side floor mat?

Absolutely, especially if there is no rubber boot around the spindle then water can track into the inside of the vehicle - much in the same way as it can get in via the screen frame blocks and bulkhead to frame seal.

It's not too bad to change the wiper boxes on a Puma, and the dash doesn't have to come out. You can free the dash off and pull it towards you enough to do the job with it in situ.

Looking closer at your pics, you still have the rubber boots on the spindles. The rust will be coming from the 'joint' area between the moving and fixed parts of the spindle. Clean and grease just now, but replacement should be on the cards before winter I would say.
Edit - Your wipers don't both sit flat, the rusty side is up a bit compared to the other one - also a sign that the wheelbox could be on the way out. |

Is there a "how to" in existence for replacing the wheel oxen on Puma? I tried the search but couldn't see anything. I'm wondering if it's worth renewing both sides plus the the drive cable thing whilst I'm in there.

Funnily enough, this is one of the few problems that Mercedes copied with the G wagen, the spindles are a leak point on them too.

I squirt ac50 in and around the spindles. Seems to do a good job. Not sure if it's supposed to be used for that but no issues as yet 2015 90 XS Santorini Black

Remove the wiper arm and the rubber cap. Squirt a copious amount of WD40, Ballistol or similar in to the bushing to wash out the rust and wet the bushing. Then follow that up with a good douse of grease and push the cap back on. If you replemish the grease a few times and operate the wipers, you might be able to save it.
Don't ignore it. It will sieze up eventually, if you do. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

I'm going to go in behind the dash and replace some parts. Re-greasing is only ever going to be a short term sticking plaster I think. I was going to replace both wheel boxes, the drive cable and possibly the crank spindle at the motor end. But this adds up to few quid in genuine parts, so was wondering what your thoughts were. As a minimum, the passenger side wheelbox will be swapped but what else is worth doing "while I am in their"?
