Sounds like a worse idea than just buying a TD5 defender!

The td5 engine is a master piece and the foibles are known and fixable, physically it will fit but you'll have challenges around the electronics for the dash, abs etc

It's probably no harder that fitting a Puma bulkhead and dash in a TD5, but you'd need to change the engine and gearbox complete*.
The problem, as with fitting a Puma dash in a TD5, would be that the CanBus IPAC won't work with the TD5 ECU. If you fitted a TD5 instrument panel in place of the TDCI panel you could avoid this problem. * No point leaving the GFT MT982 box in since the ratios would be wrong (low first probably dangerously so without idle jack) and arguable the output adaptor shaft is the single biggest flaw in the TDCi design. So although the MT82 itself is a much better engineered box and nicer to drive that the TD5's awful 5-speed, it would probably have to go. |

Can't use the 6 speed box on a TD5. Ashcrofts tried to make it work and I was told couldn't

I like this thread!!!!
If you fit a td5, you need to take a recip saw to the bulkhead vent blanks...to make the Puma a 'proper' Land Rover |

Only 2 benefits I can think of that the TD5 has. (I've never driven one mind you)
Is the sound is sweet, and it's 5 pot. |

And more economical Faster Has MEUI fuel injection Has a timing chain instead of a poxy belt Can produce V8 killing performance easily Dead simple to work on Has a decent cooling system I'm on my 9th, also look after several site vehicles that never see a road and also own a 200 and 300. Had several Tdis of my own, and a 2.4 but as an all rounder the Td5 is without a doubt the king. |

My comment was half tongue-in-cheek, but a simpler, cheaper to repair engine does appeal sometimes. |
