Mine is long gone, so i teared soft rubber thing from outside and its some sort of hard black plastic underneath and it looks like tightened with one bolt in center..so it should be simple to replace it i guess?

The bevel you can just see in the photo where the steel shaft emerges from the rubbery coating is the remains of the groove around the base of the original knob. With a hacksaw I very carefully cut through the rubbery coating down to the steel core all around the shaft, then broke up and removed the remains of the old knob. I then cut an M12 thread on the end of the steel inner shaft and fitted a standard M12 threaded knob (eBay or Amazon, I'll see if I can find a link) with an M12 half nut to lock it.

Tools needed: hacksaw, files (to clean up the cut surface), M12 die and diestock. Materials: knob, M12 half nut. Cost: around a fiver and half-an-hour of effort.

It's more comfortable than the original knob to drive with and whilst it won't appeal to the blingy sector I think it has a nice heritage flavour.

How far down goes the metal core go? Would be possible to remove all the plastic down to the gator and just in effect have normal Land Rover style metal gear stick? 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I don't know, and it is hard to tell. The gubbins under the gaiter is quite elaborate and whilst I would have preferred to go fully retro and cut it down to the gaiter I wasn't brave enough to risk it. Does anyone have access to an x-ray machine, or have a totally scrap lever they could cut up? Even second-hand they are a bit pricey just to destroy.

I see to remember that the nylon spike on the pivot actually extends above the gaiter inside the upper lever.

There is a lot of weight in the bottom of the lever (to provide damping, no doubt) and it feels as though there is more than just the steel shaft in there.

Here is my current 'situation'. Basically, rubbery thing is gone, so what is left is this very hard, shiny plastic thing, with bolt in center. Im wondering, is this bolt holding only plastic knob on the top or there is more to it, in case one want to have shiny stainless steel stick???

I think the "bolt" is the top of the steel armature. Why do you think it is a bolt, as opposed to a plain steel shaft?

You will find that there are two (I think) holes cross-drilled through the shaft which I imagine are there to allow the polymer to bind more tightly to the shaft. Mine looked very like yours before I operated, and I do think that the £4 knob looks better that than the necrotic Landrover monstrosity!

My personal solution, just cut the plastic with a saw gently up to the rod and extract the knob as you can, there is 12 mm metal insert in the center ,now you can fit an aftermarket knob or diy your with a late,i do like this since one year and work like a charm Thumbs Up

I'm surprised that someone hasn't made a reasonably priced metal gear stick that takes generic knobs. The leather and alloy sticks available are over £360 so are an expensive upgrade certainly not for everyone.
i'd like my knob (ooh er missus) to be leather rather than plastic but I don't want to cut my stick up (and risk f'ing it up). You have cool products out there like Slick Shift and TMD's Shift-R. Either are money well spent but you still have your old plastic stick. I think an affordable stick/knob solution would be a nice seller as opposed to the expensive options that currently exist.

Looks like a pool 8 ball..... (I've got plenty at work if anyone wants.... or a red or yellow ball, give it a nod to the series 4wd/Hi-low range levers Whistle )
