The bit about the EU that used to annoy the hell out of me... my sister used to bid for world aid money from the EU members and likes... the amount of back handers was ridiculous... you could clearly see that they had the best bid put forward but friends of the voters would always get it.... the EU is rife with corruption... It sickens me...

In many ways I am not a fan of the EU and yes it does need reforming.

Have a quick look at the two main exchange rates which effect the UK

US$ prior to 2008 was bubbling along at about 1.95 US$ to £

During the crash of 2008 it plummeted to about 1.36 US$ to £

It then recovered and bubbled along at 1.55-1.60 $ to £

Recently down to 1.39 $ to £. Some if not all the decrease in exchange rate I believe is due to the uncertainty of the UK staying in the EU.

Oil prices are in US$ so whereas our fuel prices have been falling due to lack of demand for fuel, that trend is very likely to go in reverse and fuel prices will rise.

Look at the Euro exchange rate. 10 years ago it was at about 1.45 euros to £. Crashed almost to parity in 2008 and has slowly risen to about 1.4 euro to £, however it has had a rapid decline to about 1.27 euro to £. So your European holidays will cost 10% more at least

So the argument that UK imports will go up iin price is very true.

The idea that UK exports will increase with a weaker £ is not so clear cut.

There will be an upward pressure on wages as peoples daily expenses go up.

Any imported parts going into a final UK manufactured part will go up

Fuel costs will go up.

So it is not as simple as saying £ goes down we will export more.

We will only export more if the £ decreases in value faster then the costs go up.

What is need are stable(ish) exchange rates

While an impressive list, I have to ask how many of these would have been achieved by the UK independently even if it had never joined the EU?
Canada certainly has a much lower GDP, lives in the shadow of the great Satan, enjoys much less influence in the world than the UK and does not belong to the EU, yet has achieved a great number of those milestones independently.........

“What did the EU ever do for us? "

By Simon Sweeny -

"What did the EU ever do for us?:
Providing 57% of our trade;
structural funding to areas hit by industrial decline;
clean beaches and rivers;
cleaner air;
lead free petrol;
restrictions on landfill dumping;
a recycling culture;
cheaper mobile charges;
cheaper air travel;
improved consumer protection and food labelling;
a ban on growth hormones and other harmful food additives;
better product safety;
single market competition bringing quality improvements and better industrial performance;
break up of monopolies;
Europe-wide patent and copyright protection;
no paperwork or customs for exports throughout the single market;
price transparency and removal of commission on currency exchanges across the eurozone;
freedom to travel, live and work across Europe;
funded opportunities for young people to undertake study or work placements abroad;
access to European health services;
labour protection and enhanced social welfare;
smoke-free workplaces;
equal pay legislation;
holiday entitlement;
the right not to work more than a 48-hour week without overtime;
strongest wildlife protection in the world;
improved animal welfare in food production;
EU-funded research and industrial collaboration;
EU representation in international forums;
bloc EEA negotiation at the WTO;
EU diplomatic efforts to uphold the nuclear non-proliferation treaty;
European arrest warrant;
cross border policing to combat human trafficking, arms and drug smuggling; counter terrorism intelligence;
European civil and military co-operation in post-conflict zones in Europe and Africa;
support for democracy and human rights across Europe and beyond;
investment across Europe contributing to better living standards and educational, social and cultural capital.
All of this is nothing compared with its greatest achievements: the EU has for 60 years been the foundation of peace between European neighbours after centuries of bloodshed.
It furthermore assisted the extraordinary political, social and economic transformation of 13 former dictatorships, now EU members, since 1980.

Once again, the typical misconceptions which are so fundamental in people's misunderstanding of what the European Union is, and how it operates lead people to declare certain reasons for staying in, which in fact have nothing to do with the EU.

It infuriates me when people say they don't want to leave Europe. Europe is the continent with a great history and diverse culture. The EU is very different. The EU stands for nothing to do with traditional European culture, or its history. All the EU is and has been is an agreement predominantly amoung European countries about deep integration thought to be the best answer to potential further divides of nations within the continent, and to keep the peace.

Unfortunately, the original goal has long been derailed in favour of a thoughtless, reckless and disastrous collection of integration policies which have utterly ignored the fundamental differences of European cultures and practices.

The European Court of Human Rights is as much to do with the European Union as Turkey has to do with the continent of Africa. Completely separate institutions. All 28 countries have signed up to the ECHR, however the EU as its own official entity has not signed up to this.

NATO has equally little to do with the EU. Fortunately, NATO actually has some military clout still, even if diminishing, but it is far too late to contemplate an EU Army which is what has now been proposed. The EU is already gutless and unable to stop the threat of the Russian Bear. NATO's unity, not the EU is what will protect us.

But worst of all, and the most important issue of our lifetime is democracy. We fought for democracy on the continent of Europe twice in the last 100 years. If we seriously choose to remain in such an undemocratic and unaccountable entity, we are going against the most important principle we have fought for in those two wars. It cannot be changed, and it is destroying democracy across the continent.  1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

Answer is very simple. No one knows now and we will never know in the future what is best- there are too many variables. Tories took us in now half of them want out, Labour under Michael Foot said we will take you out now most of them want to stay in. It really doesn't matter, whether in the EU or out Europe needs us and we need Europe.

Yes the Tories took us into a European Trading agreement and not a European State. Trade not governance. Cheers Don.

ShaggyDog, for the first time, the Lisbon Treaty addressed the question of how a country would leave the union. If it was formally decided by the government, then a two year negotiation would take place, followed by the ultimate withdrawal. One of the few things which is fortunately covered by a legal treaty.

What's more likely is that if we vote to leave, they will negotiate anyway, and give us more power, and offer us so much in an attempt to beg to remain part of the EU, then in a 2nd referendum, we vote to stay. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

I dont know where your leanimgs are on the political spectrum ar shaggy but i find myself ignorant in many respects of the fundimental facts and key issues involved in the debate and this makes process of weighing up the pros and cons before casting my vote draining ....

.I find the balance between the effort needed to get to the facts of the issue in this complex subject (and i do mean the facts not the musings of the the mail and telegraph or mirror and independant you get regurgitated on here in the guise of knowledgable posts)and the feeling my individual vote is worthless tends to make me go back to basic key principles in my decision process......

Remember I said there was no sense in nonsenswe but a basic dictum or heuristic i like to use when making a decision on many subjects is that if the numpties on the right wing of the tory party are in favour then it cannot be a good thing for the average working man in this country ..........so on that note I vote IN

I do however wish we could keep this site politics free...as an oik and proud of it ,it gladdens my heart that the wonderful defender has allowed me to rub shoulders with the great and good and very wise on here !

Your shouting fella !its the type of moaning like yours that puts me off the out crowd !We send meps to a parliment dont we?..... but we arec only a small part of the euro parliament and just because we get outvoted please dont call it undemocratic just because we lose and our influence is minimal....The institutions of the eu are corrupt you say ..Well we set them up so we the people of europe should tear them down......do you not think the financial dealingss of the city of london and the uk parliament are not corrupt?...Which bubble have your fanily been living in for the last 200 years!People in glass houses

I personally think that the vote will be to stay in europe because of inertia of the public however if you and the the other old duffers ( no offence but its how you come acoss)decide to put away the soap box and turn down the megaphone from eleven and put forward evidence based facts you may win over a many who are put off by the loony right wing AND screaming nutters that speak for them!
