After six months of no upgrades I finally managed to get two done this week for my wife's 90. On Wednesday I installed a set of RDX NAS lights from Bolt on Bits (I love this place, they have some really nice mods) :-
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge The NAS lights are so bright it's unreal and look amazing in both daylight and the dark. I ordered the regular plinths and the easy fit ones as I couldn't decide and i'm glad I did now as I ended up using a combination of both (regular on the rear and easy fit on the front). The smaller backing on the easy fit plinths made them fit a charm. Then today it was a trip down the valley to have the tyres on her Boosts switched over to a new set of Saw Tooth alloys (purchased from 4x4 tyres who are a seriously cool company to deal with). I'm a bit disappointed they came with no wheel nuts whatsoever but they did include a nice set of centre caps that just stick on and match the black ST's beautifully. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge They alter the look of the car completely over the silver Boosts. It's going in to be wrapped in January finally after we get the new (sunroof'less) roof fitted so it'll look much better then obviously. I was going to get the panoramic windows and rear door half glass fitted first but the guy in the wrapping place said not to as the plainer it is the easier it will be for him so all of these toys going on now (except the wheels) will have to come off again before it's wrapped lol. Over the next few weeks i'll be fitting a Mantec swing away spare wheel carrier that's been sat in my spare room for ages, the interior rear door card from BoB, the RDX dash console (with pod) also from Bob, a central locking system, a new full Exmoor Trim carpet set and also wiring up the heated rear window and heated door mirrors. I'll try and remember to take photos during the mods next time as i'm normally so excited getting them done I forget until the end. I hope it meets with you guys approval, have a great weekend. Yeah it was relatively straight forward swap. I'm bloody glad I got both kinds of plinth though otherwise the front lights would have fouled the small lip around the outside of the housing. The narrow back on the easy fit plinths gave it the perfect amount of clearance to rise above the lip. I ordered an extra reverse and fog light but the bottom door hinge on the back door stops the one being installed so next weekend i'm going to fit the extra reverse light and i'll have three on the bottom left and just two on the bottom right.

I don't think there ever will be an end to be honest. Over the last few weeks i've been discussing with the mechanic who maintains Monty and Stu (my Disco 2) about an engine swap. I'd love to drop a 3.9l V8 Range Rover engine in, the funds are no longer an issue and the engines are quite plentiful now. I just need to do a bit more research before we go ahead. My wife used to own a 5.7l 1967 Mustang before she met me and she loves the sound of the V8's as well so she didn't need convincing, I just want to find out what I need to do the job completely (uprated discs/brakes/etc etc) and then it'll be a go. We're finishing it cosmetically first and the engine swap will be a final job.

Just managed to get hold of a nearly new Tdci roof to fit to replace the Alpine roof we have now. We never wanted a sunroof in there to begin with but it was the only 90 roof we could get at the time. We'll be putting it in hopefully the first week of January and i'll do a proper documented update then.

We managed to fit the Mantec swing away spare wheel carrier at last. It's so much easier than carting around the wheel in load bay.
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge It's really starting to take shape now and as soon as the roof is on in January it can be stripped back down to go off for wrapping. I have no idea sorry lol. It's going in to South Wales Autowrap in Newport so whatever they use, they do some beautiful work. When the panoramic and rear door half glass is fitted (by Landy Glass) it'll be gloss black from the top of the rear tub up and a Nato matt olive green down below with a gloss black bonnet. We still have an extra two NAS lights to fit on the rear so there's two reverse lights and two rear fog lights. It hasn't had anything done for months and now this last month we've been going hell for leather on it.

Really enjoyed reading this thread and seeing the progression of your wife's Defender. You mention that you're not a mechanic and I can relate to that, especially the thrill you got from sorting the exhaust rattle. Funny how fixing simple things on a Defender can give you a lot of pleasure.
Shaggy's comments about 'not getting swept away with modding and stepping back and analysing exactly what you want to achieve/how your wife will use the 90' have a lot of value. As you've found, it is easy to spend small sums quickly, which equate to large amounts without you even realising. it is all too easy to end up with something that is more than you want or need. Keep up the great work and make sure you update the thread. A great gift for your wife and a superb project for you both. |

This will be my wifes last vehicle now she says and at the age of 60 I tend to agree. We had a plan from the start on how it would look and how much we wanted to put into it and after getting a quote earlier this afternoon for the wrap it's going to come in at around what we expected to spend. We've changed our minds on the V8 conversion now and we're going with an Allisport VNT turbo and intercooler and when the new roof is put on the first week of January we're switching out the Defender transfer box for a Discovery one. When the Panoramic windows are installed at the end of January (when Landy Glass gets the rear half door glass back in stock) it'll just be the interior then and it's finished. I'm guessing around Easter to early summer and it'll be complete. After some expert advice from @CustomSteve i'm going to put the ICE in myself.
Thanks to everyone following this build and for all of the positive comments, we really appreciate it. |

Another little mod completed today. I've had this Bolt on Bits rear door panel and handle from RST Landrovers laying around for ages, I just hadn't got around to fitting it so after I added some of the silent coat sound proofing panels the other day I thought let's get it done now while we have a dry day weather wise. A really simple job that took less than 10 minutes so I won't bore you with a move by move installation i'll just show you the end result.
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge As soon as the panoramic glass is fitted by Dave from VGS at the end of January I can seriously make a move on the interior and get all the plastic trim panels installed prior to the new interior and carpets going in. Getting quite excited now as the end is finally coming into sight. I'm earning some serious brownie points here with the wife.
