It is said that Philips Extreme Vision +130 have a better light output than the Osram Nightbreakers. No personal experience (yet), I have the Wipac Crystals with standard bulbs and was thinking about getting a pair of Philips Extreme Vision to replace the standard bulbs. Cheers, Vincent

Switzerland 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SVX Station Wagon Santorini Black
Before my LEDs I had the Wipac cristal which standard on the SVX, and had replaced the original H4 with the upgraded H4 offered by LR as an official accessory. A world of difference, crisper white, but not blue, and that was before I installed the Landreiziger loom. With that loom it would undoubtedly have been even better still.

Now, as to Jimīs quesyion about the LEDs. Suggest to read thoroughly the different threads of Nolden vs Speaker EVO and Nolden vs Speaker EVO2 comparison. Especially the last one mentioned which is the most recent and the most relevant for todays offering.
A lot of colored opinionating in there, but also some pragmatic questions, which often never got answered. Also some very true statements about IP ratings which are quite factual indeed. And some eyeball tests, but also some good photographic comparisons which are a good guidance.
So read this all carefully and then make a choice basis what you have read, see, and feel suits you best. The price of both is pretty much comparable, so personal opinion basis what is all written should guide you. One thing is for sure, either of those brands latest models will be a sharp improvement to the standard H4 lamps you probably run now.

Is that a good price?

Still seems eye wateringly expensive - are they really THAT good?

Yes they are the current Noldens and for RHD/LHT UK specification Nolden 7" BiLed Headlights somehow I very much doubt that you will find a better current price then that we have offered to Defender 2 members Thumbs Up

There are many things to consider when deciding on which LED headlights to buy. Some of the things to consider can be personal decisions such as budget and what you consider to be the best appearance of the headlights

Other things to consider is the water and dust ingress rating. The highest water ingress rating is the German specification of 9K. To my knowledge only Nolden and Trucklite have that rating whereas the JWS are only a 7

Then there is light output, now the Noldens have a measured light output of 1700 lumens and the latest JWS 8700 quote a measured effective light output of 1150 lumens.

Beam pattern will also vary between headlight manufacturers and which one individuals prefer is a personal decision.

Reliability/history of the different makers with regard to failure rate, water ingress, condensation, corrosion etc.

To date I have not come across one reported case of any issue with a Nolden LED Headlights

I would suggest you look at the 'complete package' regarding the lights.

We are not tied to any particular headlight maker, and have also been considering some of the 'newcomers on the block' To date I have not found any which has a better complete package then the Noldens Thumbs Up

When we find a LED 7" headlight that we consider the same or better then the Noldens we will try them out on our vehicles.

Funny, I just bought those bulbs last week. Just don't have the Wipac Chystals yet. Wanted to experiment without spending too much. Wink

^ Well then you really should upgrade to the Crystals, they are a big difference. And - of course - also upgrade to the "zweedse lichtversterker" or Landreiziger relay loom. Cheers, Vincent

If you have any questions Jim, just ask away will do my best to answer.

Technology in headlights is changing just like in other areas.

Some car makers are beginning to use lasers in their headlights. Laser not to be confused with Lazer lamps who make LED light units in the UK. They are using special technology to change wavelength and to alter the beam pattern as laser are normally very restricted wavelength and restricted beam pattern.

Please note whereas their are dangers in looking directly at a laser beam, in the case of laser headlights the actual laser part is within the headlight unit and the actual light output from the laser headlights will not effect the health of any oncoming car drivers. So oncoming vehicles will not be vapourised by being caught in the main beam of a laser headlight car.

I do not think laser technology is likely to get into 7" round headlights in the near future.

Thanks Brendan.

What is the difference between the 'Black' and 'Dark Chrome'?

Are there any photos anywhere to see them 'in-situ'?

Is the forum price still Ģ525?

I fitted these very Nolden lights recently. Below are a few picture examples of the light output. Pitch dark environment, using Iphone for pictures, so not best quality.

This is dipped beam, from drivers seat. (need to wash window)

here is dipped beam from stood next to car. shows the light pattern better. Many people have said about the dark patches left infant of the car, but you can't see this from drivers seat. they do have a very defined edge where the light stops, no gentle fade out at the edges.

Here is Full beam

Good range and very bright.

I don't have pre-LED shots, but it was like the light of a single birthday candle illumination with the original lights. I would class as being dangerously dim.

Thanks consumerize Thumbs Up

Do you have any photos of how they look on the vehicle? I'm trying to decide if i like the look of them when looking at the vehicle - i'm definitely sold on the output but unsure if they look OK on the Defender.

It seems there are 3 versions, clear, dark chrome and black. I've never seen the black version and I think the new limited edition Land Rover Defenders use the 'clear' version.

What do yours look like?

The full beam shot is interesting as it appears to show no light at all to the ground directly ifront of the car anymore. Is that the case? And the same with the JW Speaker?
