Would they not use the Disco / Old RR sport chassis? I know it's 10 years old now and an outgoing platform but in LR terms that's pretty current
It's well proven, not a live axle but D3s are awesome offroad. Would lend itself to modular bodies. (Just look at the a D3/4 or RRsport with a body lifted) They have the parts and the tooling, if the designed is signed off, seems like fairly rapid development, Okay it's heavy but would that be a concern? Defender roots stick an Ali shell on it to lighten. The ali monocoque is awesome and will be my next car when they put the Disco on it, but it seems a bit limited. All of the other competition seem to have stuck with Ladder frame chassis for this type of vehicle... |

Don't want to be negative, but there's still nothing concrete here, in this, or any other press "article". Like I've said previously, JLR are doing a TOP job of keeping all aspects of the "New" Defender secret.
The only aspect of the new "Defender" that I've been considering, is should the Defender name remain? I say, that if the new vehicle bears little or no resemblance to current Defenders, then it shouldn't be called a Defender. Doesn't matter whether, it's more powerful, better looking, better in many ways etc,......if it is far removed from what we know as a Defender, then it should have a different name. Pickles. |

Pickles do you think that Land Rover even know themselves what's happening? I got the impression by a couple of people who work for them that all there efforts were going into the different versions of Discovery and Range Rovers, if they never sold a huge number of Defenders then do they even need to replace it?

This article, whilst reporting on another article (!) does spell out a little more about the chassis arrangements;

Still doesn't interest me I'm afraid. Although if it's around in 30 odd years time and has stood up the test of time I might, just might be persuaded

Oh for sure, JLR would know what's happening, no doubt about that, well, IMHO anyway.
Look, I did read the "article" again, & for sure there's a few "possibilities/alternatives" there, but nothing at all specific, nothng at all really that can give anyone a reasonable idea of what the "New" Defender will constitute. Pickles. |

I thought T5 was used on the now old generation of Disco & RRS? The new RRS and yet to be seen Disco will be based on the all-new aluminium vehicle architecture. This has now been muted to be the basis for the new Defender. Dispite it being a monocoque with alumimium subframes many still use (including LR themselves) the term chassis to refer to the overall package & the articles suggest that for the new Defender there may well be additional strengthening/chassis elements. It all sounds quite exciting for me. |

It will also be interesting to see how both the main dealers and indies will be able to deal with the new challenge of aluminium. The weight savings are great to have, but what are the tradeoffs?
I've been following the Ford F-150 story in the US and there's some interesting debates and discussions over what the changes will mean for the aftermarket/repair sector. Also interesting that there a figure quoted of $750 per vehicle cost for the material change from steel to aluminium. http://www.autonews.com/article/20141103/R...r-aluminum http://www.forbes.com/sites/baldwin/2014/0...-my-f-150/ I've seen thermite welding on the railway - I wouldn't want it happening in my garage! |

"The revamped Defender family will be the last to debut and probably won't go on sale before 2017, Goss said. "Internally, it is the next significant area of investment, and we are already well down the track to create a range of products where we can dial up utility," he said. " Not sure who labelled the defender as "entry-luxury" |
