Hi Nevillerover, The big problem is Land Rover and Ford in their wisdom did not incorporate a trouble code for the fuel vapour valve (SCV) if its faulty even when on diagnostics it cannot see the valve so its not going to flag up even if there is a fault.
Re your cheap OBD adaptor, if its suitable and works you should be able to clear any error codes after fitting and avoid a garage visit. Regards Ole Dave |

I can clear codes with it Dave but not do a pump relearn. From other forums it seems that it mustn't be driven without the relearn or it damages other components......unless you know different?

Hi Nevillerover, the process is in fact called a recalibration, which I doubt your cheap OBD2 adaptor will be able to perform, as mentioned by others I would take your vehicle to a garage that have equipment that can perform the recalibration for you, a cheap OBD2 adaptor will not have the facility I doubt, it takes moments to do as I have watched them carry it out myself, basicly its an accept item Yes or No programme.

I've not read anywhere that the pressure relief valve should heal so be changed, so i haven't. It's probably a lot easier than the bar steward VCV / SCV tho, right awkward job and I damaged the retaining pip on the connector getting it off so I've now gaffer taped and cable tied it on to make sure. Regardless, it's done now and I will report back once calibrated at my local friendly garage.

If its been a case of erratic revs due to sticky SCV then it's very unlikely the pressure relief valve has blown. Garages will change them at your expense as they are not paying and can't be bothered to test them. The SCV is a proportional valve so the calibrate process updates the look up coefficients stored in the ecu so it's not just a check. It's a process of changing revs and adjusting the SCV opening position to get the correct fuel pressure at the rail. "You are never to old to learn something new"

Reading this thread with great interest as i think my puma may be suffering the same issue. Unfortunately most of the conversation is going over my head but hopefully i will be at least better informed when I take it to the garage.

Cheers Dave. Much appreciated. I have to say this is a very friendly and informative forum. I wish I'd known about it when I first got my Defender. Would have saved myself a lot of hassle and probably cash too.

So, having changed the VCV/SCV, the local garage attempted a pump and injector re-learn for me.
They couldn't get the pump to Learn because it kept saying it needed to be up to temperature which it was already. Anyone have any suggestions please? |

If you're in a cold location it's just dropping below the required temp as the test progresses.
Take it up a bit warmer initially (drive up a few hills with the radiator covered?), and/or do it in a warmer space. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

Hi Nevillerover, thats an odd one! I was in attendance when the technician coupled up the Bosch diagnostics on the first occasion following the svc change and the engine temp would not have been up to the max and there was no problem in carrying out the calibration, I will if I can get hold of the technician have a chat with him about your problem and come back to you with his remarks.
