Thanks for the comments guys
The workshop manual states that the flywheel can be skimmed down as long as it is not skimmed so that the overall thickness is less than 36.96mm. I asked them to measure and it looks like it has been previously been skimmed so with the additional damage it would most likely take it below the minimum. The slipping was only really noticeable when pulling away, would let the clutch in and it would labour a bit under load, not the acceleration (HA!) I would have normally expected but then I had a trailer on so wasn't expecting it. Driving around it really wasn't noticeable at all. Hill starts it really struggled with. Would be able to find the biting point ok but then would let the clutch peddle up fully and it would still be slipping and need alot of encouragement to get rolling. I was on in low range then changing up to hi range at the top of the hill but my instructor didn't like me doing that saying "that's not a safe way to do it" I disagree. Bit of an update, Today bought the one I had posted about previously and have got it on its way to them on a before 10 courier. Harwoods are happy with this and have pushed her out the workshop into there lot so its out the way so they can crack on with other bits while they wait for parts. My service advisor has been amazingly helpful and answered all my questions and queries as promptly as he can. Even called me at 8:30 this morning to confirm today's plan. So, yes Harwoods are expensive but they really are working hard for the money in my opinion. |

This was one of the hills used for a hill start. It climbs quite steeply where you start and then have to stop by the curb, then pull out and carry on say 20 yards then pull in and stop again then start. Probably did this about 4 times in a row in the morning then some town driving around Chatham, Rainham and Gillingham which is all quite hilly and then back again for 4 more in the afternoon so was expecting everything to get hot because its quite hard work. I wasn't expecting it to fail though. |

I'm afraid I'd have to agree with your instructor, you could easily find that your stopped with no drive at all. Also there would be a massive strain on the drivetrain during the hi / low transmission change. Ideally iirc you shouldn't change between hi and low under load. |

I only changed down when parked up stationary and up when on level ground or with enough momentum to change easily.
I have done this loads of times when going from mud to tarmac as described in my owners manual: Click image to enlarge Please excuse rubbish photo, we have 2 scanners in this house and because I want to use them they aren't working..... |

Well, still in a Freelander 2.
Got a phone call on Saturday morning expecting it to be ready but on the test drive it developed "a loud rattle", they suspect exhaust issue, if not could be clutch misaligned so wont be back till Monday at the earliest. Which is a bit sad because I miss her but more worryingly.....I'm stating not to miss her and hankering after a Discovery While I love her ruggedness and all round practicality, the Freelander has really awakened me to just how incredibly noisy my 110 is. I love her to pieces but on a 250 mile weekly commute she really is very noisy and a bit uncomfortable. I have always liked Discovery 3-4's and you can get a lot of Discovery 3 for same money as a ok condition Td5 Defender. Plus a heavily modified Discovery 3 can look Les boules du chien So, sound proofing and sound proofing and sound proofing is on the cards instead of spending the money on a nice discovery for the daily commute and then keep the defender as a weekend toy. which would lead to her just spending weeks being stood and not used. So, sound proofing, what sort of budget do I need to get my 200Tdi down to reasonable levels for every day use? Time-scales? Does anybody do a full sound proofing service? |

CSK do soundproofing, mention me if you go that route.
He could probably do the lot for you, may not be cheap but done for life. |

I know it will be expensive because to do it properly will take time and effort and the materials to be done properly.
I might have a go at it myself but I imagine if I stripped out the interior and gave it all a clean ready so all they had to do was install the sound proofing and the trim would make it easyer. Then again if I have gone to the effort of stripping it out its only another few hours and I've done it all myself. |

Most of the time is taken up with careful deconstruction. Getting it all apart safely and in-tact is much more time consuming than fitting back in.
If you do it yourself you could do sections at a time when it suits you. |

Chris, pop down and see the 90 we have stripped out at the moment.
We are carrying out full soundproofing using Skinz, same as we used in our red 90, you can't tell the difference between that and Dynamat and it's substantially cheaper ! You'll like this one, it's a brand new left hooker that has been painted matt green and has an Ashcroft auto conversion. It's destined to spend its life at our clients house in Monaco |

Welp, .
Picked her up paid my bill, got in nice new very heavy clutch, drove off the forecourt......funny rattle. Humm, drive to end of the road.....funny rattle continues......drive down the hill to the roundabout- funny rattle follows. back we go then.... Park up on the forcourt to a look of puzzlement from everyone who had seen me leave not moments ago. Open the bonnet and have a poke around and find that the bracket that holds the exhaust to the side of the engine only bolted on at one end which may explain the rattle! Give them there dues they were very good and immideately gave me back the Freebey and said they would look into it tomorrow first thing. Bit annoyed but level of service was as ever very good. Just a shame about the rattle. |

That we are, though i see light through the woods because......I GOT HER BACK!!!
Massive massive massive thank you to Harwoods Tonbridge for spending time with me on the floor and underneath to have a look. Found the offending rattle which was caused by the bracket which attaches the exhaust to the side of the engine being loose at the front and rattling against the engine mount. So 3 workshop technicians stayed on after hours to sort it and sort it they have Had alot of fun waiting in the show room as they drove out the old 2014 models and drove in the new 2015 models. Got a beautiful pair of 90's in at the moment as well as something rather special..... A bowler 110 doublecab! See the spotted section shortly! |
