Thank you all!
Its very good to be back, I cant believe how long it has been as to me it has felt like a couple of days, but I have indeed grown older, wiser and probably more shaggy. (definitely heavier ) Needless to say I will feel far better once I'm back behind the wheel of my truck. As for doggo, I will shortly do a introduction in the defender 2 dogs section but to ally any worry, he is mostly a good boy....sometimes. May also start a thread about the Locomotives as there is a lot of overlap between these ancient, outdated, heavy, leaky, rusty, expensive things and Steam Locomotives. Procta, My apologies I missed your post but my heart goes out to you, its a horrible thing to have happen so my condolences to your loss, but I'm glad to see you stayed within the fold What was I going to say.. ah! Bit more progress today, the paint has been ordered and it looks like the first pair of doors will be heading into the paint shop at the end of the month. I will probably retain as much as I can from the old door but I'm thinking that the window channel plastics will all be replaced as they are original and probably well past best. Has anyone else done this and what dramas can I expect moving forward? I also plan to put some dynamatting (or equivilant) and some insulation into the door to try and keep some of the noise down. I had pondered putting central looking into the door but that may be asking for more trouble than its worth. Plus I have no idea how I would . The plan is to spend a day swapping the internals onto the new doors and then refitting them which I think should be achievable in a day given plenty of tea. Well that lasted long
Driving home from work on my way to dogging in when suddenly a regular loud ticking/knock emanated from the engine. I dipped the clutch and it slowed down with the engine revs so must be engine related, let the clutch back in and WHAY who put an exhaust brake on this because I damn near stopped. Clouds of blue smoke from the exhaust and the knock considerably louder combined with a missfire. Typically on a high narrow 50mph road so nowhere to stop and if I stop on it I'm bound to be rear ended by a truck so press gingerly on with clouds of blue smoke coming from the exhaust. The gear stick was now wiggling around violently in a fashion which would make an Ann Summers rep blush and really down on power. About a mile later came to the end of the road which had a large grassy area so I aimed for that and jumped out. Knocking still present, no chuffing from the oil filler and no sign of snot - good. No oil in the coolant and coolant not bubbling away - also good, probably not head gasket. Oil has dropped about 5mm off the low on the dipstick.- bad. I have a horrible feeling I have just lost a piston ring(s) Recovered home. Much sadness. Plan is leak off test and bore cam so I can have a wee look before I start stripping everything down. Rashers
Dogging in is using dogs to lay scent and effectively heard the pheasants back into the roosting areas of the shoot It does need a better name sadly, its one which has very different connotations now! Girlfriend says I'm Pheasant herding which I think sounds better. These things happen, luckily its something I can fix it just needs time and money. They are far more challenging Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

So after a few days cool off and make some decisions I decided to start at the top and check the simple things first.
Rocker cover off and instantly found something untoward. Inlet valve on no.1 cylinder has somewhat excessive clearance See video below (hopefully) Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Looks like the adjuster nut has come loose and just unwound itself right out so fingers crossed that is the issue and a quick re-adjustment will put all right with the world again. Quite incredible to think it still starts and runs in this condition! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

So bit of an update.
Pulled the glowplugs out and re-gapped the rockers and turned it over making all the right noises. Found the fan belt was knackered so needed replacing, put it all back together and started it up and off she went happy as larry. Did a quick test drive around town and up and down the bypass which she was producing a lot of blue and black smoke to begin with but then settled down nicely. Test drive to work this morning and it seems to have drunk more oil than I would have anticipated though I am parked on a wee slope so wont know until I get home. Fingers crossed think I got away with it. Quite remarkable really Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

Well another month rolls past, this one seeing 225000 miles click over on the odometer so a triumphant cheer was had and there was much rejoicing.
A few hiccups this month most notably: A front swivel rebuild and bearing renewal Click image to enlarge A Fuel Cap Leak developing (which is sort of fixed I think ) Click image to enlarge Rear wheel bearing going loose Click image to enlarge Front Brake pipes needing renewal A shredded alternator belt Click image to enlarge A new exhaust rear section. New rocker cover seal and engine degrease For what is quite a short month it feels like a very long way to payday Even took the ginger land shark out to do our bit clearing up trees. One was more helpful than the other Click image to enlarge There are still more jobs to do but in the main part given the miles I do I'd say she is sitting pretty Click image to enlarge Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |
