polish, ive heard of that stuff somewhere before, starting to think it has something to do with what i saw a neighbour doing to his motor. strangely he was covering it in water and rubbing it all over! apparently it gets it "clean"
sounds to technical for me My 109 thread my youtube channel |

Hi Guys,
My old steering wheel was getting very tatty and after 22 years of use the leather was starting to suffer a bit. In step FCX who have done a wonderful job on re-trimming it. Matt was helpful and friendly as ever in sourcing a Blue stitch as close a match as possible to match the exterior colour. He also leant me a wheel to use while mine was off with Rich being re-trimmed. All in all a very happy customer - highly highly recommended! As some of you may have read my clutch died on me during my trailer training the other week.
I got recovered to Harwoods Tonbridge who have always been fantastic. Anyway, got a phone call today saying my flywheel is damaged and needs replacing. He sent me some photos and they are below. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Worryingly, the clutch centre plate looks to be in very good condition, the centre splines look good and not corroded, all the springs and rivets are still in place and the cooling veins on the clutch material is still present. So why did it fail so prematurely and in such a big way? The flywheel has got some fairly serious scarring and hot spots consistent with it slipping quite hard consistently. One theory is that the hydraulics are out of balance and have caused the clutch to slip slightly, which when its just me and the weight of the vehicle is very minor. However, when loaded or in this case towing has caused it to overheat and damage. Now, 2 ways I can sort this. 1. Replace the clutch with a new one and reassemble with existing flywheel back on and then just accept that it will wear out much quicker and have more of a chance of clutch judder. 2. Replace the flywheel and put the problem to rest. I want to go with number 2, but a new flywheel is a eye watering £423.60 (inc vat) which I think is a bit much for a flywheel. I am not going to skim it as this can cause all sorts of problems (one of which is the flywheel parting company and coming up through the floor ) Does anyone have a Plan 3 or a 200Tdi Flywheel they can offer? |

Oh dear, not good!
As I pretty much knew the immediate signs I got home and left it I'm hoping it'll be okay. When they start to go they rapidly start doing more damage. Rang again today and got through to an actual mechanic and he said he's going to have a look tomorrow. It hasn't helped my clutch having to squeeze in tight driveways and having idiotic neighbours parking tactics. |

By the way just looking at a quick price up of a flywheel £420 seems too high.
I'm seeing prices of £320 max. |

Very interesting reading.
I suspect it has been dragging as she has been a bit of a cow between gears occasionally and occasionally clashes gears from neutral to reverse even though clutch is disengaged. I have found this http://www.ribblevalley4x4.com/allmakes/AM_ERR719.html which is much better than what was originally quoted. What do we think? |
