being a little nervous of anything defender.......
went to get wheels balanced and I'm told the tracking is out on all 4 so no point wasting time balancing wheels until the tracking etc is sorted. now driving like miss daisy and only on nice smooth roads etc I'm very much of the opinion that any probs that exist have been there since day one. now since I've had the odd problem with my car could it be there's an underlying problem thats causing the tracking to be out on all 4 or is it just a case of 'bad luck' get it adjusted. (I guess this just helps to confirm my theory - my car fell of the production line and will never be right) ps - I presume you can adjust the rear? |

hmm an independant report seems like the answer but obviously needs to be someone that really knows defenders otherwise I suspect that could be another waste of time?
almost done 30k miles its been pampered all its life....I've never even shown it a picture of a muddy / rocky track and its certainly never bumped off any concrete stuff to the best of my knowledge. really wouldn't expect bushes to be worn out yet (but then I'm still new to this crazy world). |

I have lost count of how many times my Defenders have had to have the tracking adjusted.
Half the problem is the ******* great potholes in virtually every road you drive on. Still, look on the bright side, we have to remortgage the house every time SWHMBO's Porsche has to have the alignment (posh term for tracking ) adjusted Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

The tracking can be knocked out of line so easily on a small pot hole or a slight kerb and if you hit a big pot hole it can be massively out. Most people never get their tracking done unless the car has been damaged but I'd suggest having it checked at least every two years preferably every year which can save money in the long run on tyre wear and bush wear etc.
Definitely after tyres have been replaced. |

HA !!
that moose just winked at me! don't remember it doing that before? far enough if they needing doing on a regular basis so be it. wish I'd known of that before. rather suprised though if the potholes have done it cos they all appear to be very evenly out of alignment. plus amazed I've never had this problem on ordinary cars then you get an 'off roader' that can't cope with pot holes?? I'm beginning to this this defender malarky is just a bad joke. so I guess I need a new set of tyres and then lets see what else needs sorting....clutch and transfer box perhaps...oh then the handbrake maybe......give me strength. |

Deffo get a second opinion i would expect a tyre retailer to tell you that you need all new tyres and balancing/alignment as this would be a nice earner for him then when your vibration is still there he,ll say well it,s not your tyres ! 2005 Td5 90 XS

It's not just 4x4s that can have tracking knocked out by potholes but when I used to do 4 wheel alignment as part of my job 4x4s were always more of a pain to get spot on. If they are not far out it might not feel any different to drive at all, but if any part of the wheel alignment is a long way out cars usually feel terrible to drive.

How old is your Land rover?
The reason I ask is that my Disco needed a full set of new bushes on both Radius arms and whatever they are called on the back axle and it was only eighteen months old.. They had gone sort of soft allowing the axles to move back and forth. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

it'll be 3 yrs old in October and I'm VERY VERY keen to get everything sorted by then.
the tyres you see are not in a good shape. the inside is as he put it 'stepped'. the rubber blocks of tread are not at the same leve as the next one. and the surface is shiney. I can't for the life of me understand how they can be 'stepped' but they are. gonna go out and have a quick look at the bushes and I'll let you know what I find. |

very good. - just been out and had a look....the scary thing being is the rear to my eyes doesn't have any adjustment - is that right? if so then how do I fix? didn't have too much of a look at the front but clearly there's the toe in / out via the steering rod. is that the only adjustment? |

This/\/\/\ Also start lubing the steering rods long before (if) it goes for in tracking, save a lot of messin about if he fitter bends the steering rod coz the TRE's are rusted in place, you can take the steering rod off in 5 minutes to give it a proper lube and free them up yourself. |

If he undoes the track rod he's definitely going to need the tracking checked unless he either marks the rod and counts the number of turns of the TRE's OR he measures the toe in first.
Who did the tracking check Caterham? TBH I would only go somewhere that knows Defenders and not any old high street tyre and exhaust outlet. Anyway, have a read http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopi...ntry419578 Besides, the vehicle is still under warranty so bang it in to somewhere other than your regular dealer [who by now should know exactly how you take your coffee and have it waiting on the counter as soon as they see you]. Steve,
no ones done the tracking yet. I went to get the wheels balanced and he said there's no point. the wheels may already be fine, you need to go sort your tracking out and then your tyres. I'd seen it myself before and thought it strange but left it at that. the inside of the tyres are shiney / polished on the tread and then theres a step up to the tread in the middle so clearly this isn't right (is it?). If it were a track car wish some serious camber setting I might expect it but on the def I'd have expected the tread to wear evenly? can anyone confirm if the tread on the conti's would normally wear evenly / flat across the tyres. it was suggested this could be the cause for my vibration (I still think its mechanical but until this is resolved I guess I wont know). as above - is there any adjustment on the rear? and is it just the track rod ends that adjust on the front? |
