Do the tracking AFTER you've put on the new tyres and had the wheels balanced or its a waste of money because most suspension/wheel/tyre changes have an effect on wheel alignment

....but where did you get the tracking checked? If it was yer average High St tyre and exhaust place I wouldn't go jumping to conclusions that the rear end is out of alignment solely based on their judgement.

Can you post up some photos of the wear on all four? Steve.

A bit of string, or a suitable extending rod ideally, is all you really need to check the front tracking on a Defender.

The rear is just as important. You can usually tell if it is out by abnormal tyre wear(have a look at the edges of the tread to see if they are 'burring' over) and depending upon how out they are by following the car and you would see it driving at a slight angle. You would be quite surprised how many cars have their rear tracking out. You would also be quite shocked at the excessive wear on bearings, bushes, etc... that this causes

smb - the rear must be out due to the uneven wear, problem is I can't see how you adjust it?

so how do you 'track' a solid axle on a Defender?

Granted there is the tiniest bit of adjustment in the rear tie rods, but not tracking per se.

As you don't have any equipment to correctly measure any of the geometry I suggest you leave it well alone. Replace any damaged tyres and balance the wheels then take it too a reputable garage (not the likes of kwik fit) and get a full 4 wheel alignment done with read outs that will show every measurement is within tolerance then you can relax as you will have the evidence in front of you that it's all straight so this can be ruled out of your future worries of which I'm sure there will be many. Thumbs Up

"Having noticed a small dent in his rear offside door Caterham decided to try out his panel beating skills. After all how difficult could it be? The end result was not what he expected and a trip to the garage (again) was obviously on the cards!"

You shouldn't say such things, he will be out now making sure the chassis isn't bent.

Tracking on the rear of a Defender is fixed - it's a beam axle so unless you've bent your axle you can't have the tracking out on all 4 wheels. There is no adjustment for the rear and the fact that the garage you went to suggested there was shows they are not competent to correctly measure it.

The front can be adjusted but as others have said, take it to someone competent with Defenders as the vast majority of tyre places haven't a clue what they're doing when it comes to a Defender and alignment. They probably interpreted the offset in track between the front and rear as a problem when it's actually quite normal on a Defender. The laser alignment sets are the worst for this if incorrectly used.

You can also set the tracking up yourself at home with a bit of wire/string, at least close enough not to give uneven tyre wear problems. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

I would get a written opinion from a tyre specialist first to back you up perhaps? I think all the usual excuses will come out....."They must have been over inflated Sir!" etc. etc. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
