Have to admit, when I was racing a few years back I was desperate to get hold of a certain socket size that I didn't have (can't remember what size) and the only option was Halfords.

The ratchets didn't last too long on the drives apart from the 1/2" is still going strong, but the sockets (and indeed the spanners) lasted, in fact, I still use them today and are still like new.

It seems to be fashionable to knock Halfords but they do sell some very good tools. I've got two of their socket sets that are both now well over twenty years old and in all that time I've only replaced one socket.

Their ratchet spanners are particularly useful too. Darren

Halfords Professional range tools are as good as any, and have a lifetime warranty. Thumbs Up

Halfords other tools are just like any other high street supplier, ie cheap and nasty! Big Cry

The only problem with buying Halfords Pro is the risk that someone you know might see you in there and the consequent embarrassment! Embarassed

I've got a britpart tool from Simon at MPS.

.....even if the tool turns out to be rubbish (which I'm sure for my occasional use it'll be just fine) it was still money well spent cos the service was once again second to none.

thanks Simon.

I just hope it fits, and the hex doesn't turn out to have five (or 7) sides! Sadly nothing would surprise me!

Since I've had my Defender (2 Years) I've done all my work on it with a € 20 socket and spanner set from Aldi - including having to stand on and kick the ratchet as it struggled to remove the too tight square plugs on the diffs. The only socket I broke was one of the cheap (not that cheap either) Halfords ones Laughing

Am currently waiting for my 110XS to arrive in September.

Up until now, I have always carried an extending wheel brace with socket to fit.

What size are the wheel nuts on a Defender, please? With luck I can use the same wheel brace with a decent socket instead of whatever short useless bit is provided. 1970 Series 2A 88"

Don't forget that you are supposed to renew the prop shaft nuts (metal locking nuts) each time they are taken off - in an emergency certainly use some threadlock....

27mm across the flats, if memory serves me. The supplied wrench is completely adequate unless you grotesquely overtighten your wheelnuts or are a weakling. You will of course need a socket for the torque wrench when doing them up.

Good to hear. I haven't owned a Defender before, only my S2A but the daily drives usually came with a useless short bit of rubbish, completely inadequate when matched against the wheel nuts torqued on by some heavy handed chimpanzee at the tyre fitters. Having a larger wheel brace with these was usually a matter of common sense.

I also don't have a torque wrench. Is one of these essential when tightening wheel nuts? 1970 Series 2A 88"

Torque wrench is not essential but it a good idea. If you use the supplied wrench and tighten the nuts pretty firmly, they'll be about right. If you get the chance, see what correctly torqued nuts feel like with the normal wrench.

If a gorilla's tightened them you may find that a length of pipe slipped over the handle helps when loosening, but don't use it to tighten them.
