South Africa 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Alpine White
Defender Drawer System
Morning all,

We've had a 'standard' drawer system in the landy for a few years now, but I am not happy with the fridge being on top of the drawers.

The obvious solution is to remove one side of the drawer and bring the fridge down to the load-bay level (by the rear door hinge).

Has anyone done this? Pros/cons?

Thanks! --

I spend some time looking at rear storage fridges draws etc and came to the conclusion that the draw would not suit my needs so I ended up building my own. It works really well and massively increases the storage and ease of use. I took a lot of inspiration from here (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/9034-Post-up-your-drawer-storage-system)

I did create a build thread for the project here (http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=71292&page=1)

Wow, thanks Jason, that looks very similar to what I had in mind:

The two things you need to consider is the back door and back door catch, if you look at mine the fridge is slightly offset to clear the door catch, and on the right I have wolf boxes on the Right.

If you access my build thread you will note that I made my unit 8cm higher than it needed to be to clear the fridge but this then put it level with the dog guard which allowed me to build a sleeping platform.

the wheel arch 'bins' are covered with two removable boards these just lift and slide out of the way giving you access to them.

I made it, I brought two 50m rolls of seat belt webbing similar to this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/50mm-2-inch-roll...460c3731e9 and made nets for the front and back.

Where did you get the runners for the fridge shelf?

After looking around various setups, I think I've found something that could work, based on the following design:

Instead of the window boxes, we will have a row of ammo boxes on each side, accessible via gullwing doors.

There will be 2 load bins between the window sill and wheelarches. I can fit all big recovery kit in one and camping chairs/tent/mats in the other.

The camping table will go in a horizontal slot in the middle on top of the fridge/drawer combo. On top of that we can stuff pillows, and other big+light items, secure by a net.

Can anyone spot any obvious shortcomings? Smile --

While on the subject of maximising the space I can use inside the landy, what is the best way to go about increasing the clearance when opening the rear door on a Defender?

After-market wheel carrier? If so, which one?

For example, in my previous post above, it seems to me that the rear door on that landy can open far wider than mine does - I do not see a strut like on mine? --

As you may have read that photo was my inspiration.

By 'Ammo boxes' do you mean plastic Wolf type boxes or metal ammo boxes?

What do you mean by gullwing doors? Are they the doors that replace the windows?

I made a high level shelf in mine it was really simple to make and picked up on the window guard brackets:

I use that for lightweight bits like coats, pillows and sleeping bags, as you want to store heavy things as low as possible.

Yes to open the door further you need a spare wheel carrier this offsets the opening and helps it open that couple of inches more, the Mantec carrier will give you more room.
