Sorted my injector seals and washers today on my Td5. Not a difficult job untill one of the holding bolts on the injector camshaft snapped when I was trying to undo them. The job had previously been done about 4 years ago by a "specialist", the heads of the bolts were decidedly suspect as if he'd used some Mickey Mouse sockets that he got from Argos! I was dreading the injector clamp bolts but that must have been done by a different mechanic as they posed no problems at all. Popping them up with an appropriate allen key was no stress at all and the process of swopping to new seals and washers was no hassle at all.
Then the process of putting it all back together, sorted extracting the broken bolt, good things these left hand drill bits! Cobbled up a replacement and away we went. Next problem was the setting of the rocker arms. I didn't want to faff about taking the fan off to get better access to the crank bolt so whilst pondering I hit on the idea of rocking the motor whilst in gear, worked well, I knew I had an A bar on the bumper for a reason, gives a good hand hold! Drained the oil and replaced for now, just need to keep an eye on the level as it had gained 2l in a week and must have been close to being able to run on it's own fumes! The smell of diesel when the rocker cover first came off was quite overpowering. Hopefully this might cure another problem, symptoms of a leaking pressure regulator, diesel type leak off the rear of the engine wetting the starter motor and dripping off the bell housing. When the acoustic cover was off the normal suspects were fairly dry and when I took the rocker cover off, the rubber gasket, especially the semi circular bit at the rear looked very suspect so a liberal dosing of blue hylomar(all that I'd got or it would have had to be kitchen and bathroom silicon). So the long and short is that it is sorted, it runs like it should which is better than it has been lately and now to get some more bits on order, new rocker shaft bolts and a new rocker cover gasket and see if there are no more leaks, at least from there! |

Picked up my Puma this afternoon. Goodwinch distributed Kingcone made winch fitted (hope its not cheap rubbish), rubber A bar, Wipac headlights (not as in Paddocks catalogue pic) +H4 bulbs & 2x 55w driving lights fitted. Also new MoT & annual service done. Full tank of fuel.
I'm modded-out now. Apart from sound proofing & the unending war against untraceable rattles, squeaks etc. 6 months road tax. At least I can pretend its 12..... Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. I've actually got a nearly rattle free Defender at the moment New suspension bushes and fairly new shocks, the only rattle I noticed driving today was the brake pads rattling, that I can live with, it goes quiet when I brake, so an allmost stealth mode Defender. I can appreciate the de-cat and mid box replacement again
