Absolutely. Frequent and thorough checking of balls is essential...
The balls in the rear hinges, unlike the side door hinges, do not wear in a way that creates play. What happens is the brass ball wears away becoming more oval and the whole door lowers gradually, but no play. The only symptom is that the door striker begins to rub a bit more on the bottom than it did previously. I have this on my list to do on Miffy. I replaced hers eight years ago now and they are due for replacement again soon. |

When I got the door painted I got new hinges as well. When the door is shut properly the door handle is stiff to get up but does go. Door seal off I think and try again to narrow down the issue. 1999 Defender TD5 110

New door hinges Look at you I bet they weren't greased on fitment, try and squeeze some lithium multipurpose or CV grease into them for slick opening

Not greased but the hinges do move quite easily. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Yesterday had a few bits replaced on the 110.
Both front CVs Both front discs & pads Swivel seals/gaskets Swivel bearings(king pin?) Wheel bearings Drive flanges & bolts Front diff The car seems a lot smoother and a bit quieter but only done a short drive home. Both front CVs had side to side play and in/out play - probably originals. Brake discs have been on the car since I got the car around 10 years ago, have done over 110k miles 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

That is a good load of work John
We have had about 3" of rain here in the last few days so there has not been much chance of getting out to do anything, short of donning a mask dry suit and snorkel that is |

It is yikes. But, needed doing as both front CVs had play - as you know
I guess after 250k miles things wear out. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

First decent drive since the work was done on the front end. Certainly a lot quieter and smoother. Steering feels a bit more precise but I did have work done and bearings replaced for the swivel kingpins? 1999 Defender TD5 110

I know exactly what you mean John... I took MIffy around the carpark last night and it was noticeably smoother all round. Heading off this evening for a better drive now that the front number plate is back on. Although Miffys brakes need a second good bleed having been emptied... There be bubbles in them calipers...

Not sure if the smoothness is the new diff, wheel bearings, cv joints, or drive flanges. My money is on a combo of CVs and Diff. 1999 Defender TD5 110
