Easy, very simple answer:
When manufacturers design/ build/ develop an engine they will put software on it. They will then look into the following requirements- Power, Torque, Economy, reliability, fuel etc. They will then select the easiest most basic program that suits all the criteria. Re-mapping is where a company (loads to choose from) fine tunes the figures to increase the necessary criteria that you specify 'Maximum power', 'Bes MPG' etc. Glyn |

Thank you.
So there must be some sort of trade off or negative to this? |

In general no...... Land Rover have gone for a maximum power of 122bhp....... so they probably de-tunned the engine to get this figure. Also remember the more power you have the less throttle/ effort you need so technically you are prolonging the life of your engine.
I would say the only down side to it is that you might find that fuel quality may affect it more- but that is about it. I still don't have any problems with mine after 2 years and all sorts of fuel from 'winter fuel' in Austia to the low quality stuff out here. I am sure that if you pm/email any of the sponsors (Alive, BAS, iRB) hey will probably be able to expand more on it all. Glyn |

I may be completely wrong, but don't manufacturers use maps to sell more powerful versions of the same engine but for more money; e.g. the Freelander has the TD4 (150bhp) and SD4 (190bhp) - but it's the same PSA 2.2 Turbo Diesel, just with different software settings.

This does appear to be the case, especially so in more recent years. However, there is a tremendous amount of potential available, that we can of course extract. Regards, Gary. |

Ok to try and simplify it for my understanding, if I get my 2.4 ltr mapped its going to feel like a bigger more powerful motor, ltr therefore when I tow my heavy off road caravan it is going to tow easier also?

It will feel more powerful, more responsive and will tow MUCH better (the main reason I got mine done). Glyn |

The biggest gain you get from remapping a diesel engine, is with torque. The more torque an engine has, the 'bigger' it feels, as it's more able to deal with any additional loading. It will feel much stronger! Please bear in mind that there are remaps, and there are remaps. There is literally millions of combinations of changes can be made, to any ECU, so it's essential you choose a company with a good reputation, and experience of tuning land rovers. Best Regards, Gary. |

Thank you Gary.
I (think) I have chosen a local company purely due to their reputation. Just out of interest, Alive was my first option based on everything I have read but due to poor exchange rates for South Africans it makes your product hugely expensive unfortunately and I will not be able to do the Alive tuning option. |

Bruce, if you are coming to this side of the world in Dec, wait until you can drive my landy. You can then assess the driveability/power before you commit. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

Fair enough, but I do not doubt you are doing the right thing. You will save a bucket of money on fuel during that drive, esp with the bigger intercooler.
Yep, with Regard as well. I am going to Mauritius from the 18th though, so it will have to be before then. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |
