TD5 Engine Oil Leaks
hi there

i have a couple of oil leaks on my TD5 engine, thought it was the rocker cover gasket which has been changed, but still have the oil leak, i have oil dripping off the underneath of the belt tensioner, but above all looks dry, and also having oil leaking onto the exhaust downpipe, thought this might be the turbo return pipe but this is dry, has any one else had a similar problem, and could you give me some ideas of where to look next

cheers Mark

You need to get under it, ideally on a ramp. The most common leak is the oil from the rocker at the back of the engine, but obviously yours are the front.

Just to guess - Leak near tensioner/idler could be the front cam cover which leaks as the rubber o-ring seal shrinks/hardens. The one around the exhaust downpipe could just be from the main filter (not the rotor filter) which may need tightening, although it is common for pipe gaskets to leak from the rotor filter unit.

Oil on the downpipe could be from the oil filter cartridge, sometimes cheap filters will "undo" by themselves, also the rotor filter is worth a wipe round. Of course the leak may just be spilt oil from a previous oil and filter change.

thanks guys for the suggestions, but the main filter is dry and tight and the cover to the rotor filter is also dry, no excess oil, wiped all areas dry then took it for a run, again have oil on the down pipe, but no visible sign of where its coming from, will check cam cover but this did seem to be dry as well. I've had oil leaks from:
Rear half moon on the rocker cover gasket and the back corners
Front cam cover (remove the top cover and the rad cowling and you will see a black plastic disc)
The seal that goes between the turbo oil return pipe (this left me with oil on the bottom of the oil filter and down pipe)

Most leaks have slowed down now. 1999 Defender TD5 110

thanks guys, will check the oil seal again on return pipe, as every thing else is dry,

the oil feed to the vac pump, is this an oil seal as well or does the whole part needs replacing as i have oil dripping on to the belt tensioner and looking to see if this is the problem

cheers Mark
