Hi,
I have a 2005 TD5 110 CSW that has an alive tuning stage 1 remap possibly some exhaust mods and a k&N panel filter. It possibly has the EGR removed, I have not checked and all the work had been done before I bought the vehicle. Over the last few weeks there has been a massive loss in power when cold, i.e. within the first 3 miles of start up on a morning not when temps are sub zero. I drive down a lane for a few hundred yards then exit onto a main road every morning and once on this main road the landie runs as if the turbo has been disconnected, there is only just enough power to get to 30ish MPH in the first 1/2 mile. The first journey each morning is only a couple of miles for the school run and once the kids are dropped off the thing runs fine with the usual kick when it comes on boost. It is as if the ECU is banning all turbo pressure, there is a lack of diesel or something is sticking but it disappears once warm. Does anyone have any suggestions? It was serviced a 1000 miles ago and has only covered 55k miles. I have had this vehicle for 8000 miles now and this problem has only just started to show up. I find with my 1999 TD5 (no remap only D'EGR'd & straight though mid section) that when its cold the car is really easy to stall and pulling out of junctions it needs the revs bringing up rather than just going IYKWIM.

MAF? Try disconnecting it and see if any difference. The ECU reverts to default values after 30s or so, but prior to that it can have almost zero power. Yours sounds like it runs bad for a bit too long for this to be the sole cause though.
For what it's worth, mine is pretty crappy when cold, but not as bad as you describe yours. I'd check: fuel pump, turbo wastegate (although I doubt it if it starts up bad then gets better). Can you hear the turbo spooling up during the bad period or is it silent? |

I will try the MAF tomorrow.

Could a contributing factor be a faulty or gunked up Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor?
I had a recent issue with some general sluggishness + turbo not appearing to spool up when expected. Nowhere near to the extent that you describe though. Cleaned up the MAP sensor itself and the electrical contacts and my problem solved. As you'd taking off the acoustic cover to check the MAP then you could see if the EGR has been blanked off too. If you've got a K&N filter, it wouldn't hurt to take it out and give it a clean and oil it up. Knowing the Alive lads reasonably well (I have a stage 1 / egr blanking from them), you can be confident that they'd have had that truck running just right for the previous owner before they'd have allowed her to leave their workshop. Could always give them a shout to see if they could suggest anything else? One other thought but it's probably a daft one as your problem seems to go away, ...... could the throttle position sensor be misreading in some way ???? Somebody far more knowledgeable than me will be along to clarify I'm sure. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

So thats MAP and MAF to check/clean tomorrow evening.
The K&N filter was new 1000 miles ago so shouldn't need anything. I spoke to Gary at Alive just after I bought the truck as I knew it had been to Alive but didn't know what it had had done. I was told it had been mapped but Gary didn't have full access to his systems to tell me what else had been done, it still has standard hoses on so Gary doesn't think it has had the full Alive works. Pressing the throttle further when the truck is struggling generally makes it struggle further, my thoughts are it is a sensor somewhere that is mis reading but sorts itself out when it is a bit warmer. My understanding of petrol engines is much better than a diesel, I would have figured this by now in a petrol. Thanks for the help so far, I might take it back to Gary at Alive eventually as I want some more toys. It does sound like the MAF sensor.
A google search shows a few posts about similar symptoms and they all suggest only fitting a genuine LR replacement. Good luck. If the K&N is that new then I'd suspect the MAF. K&N's can shed the oil they're coated with, which can play havoc with MAF sensors. Darren

Will a clean with brake cleaner sort the MAF if it is just an oil coating?

MAF's can be revived with brake cleaner, but it's not guarenteed.
To be honest, the suggestion to talk to Gary at Alive is a good one. I'm pretty sure he doesn't recommend K&N filters and he also keeps good quality MAF's on the shelf. Problem will be your MAF.
MAF's and oiled air filters don't get on Cleaning has never worked for me, or my mates New one is £96 from main dealer, but Gary at alive is better, friendlier, and will stick in the post all for less money than a main dealer Andy |

I agree, MAF'S don't like this type of filter. I have had a slow TD5 for ages, never really bothered me as I don't go fast. My friends 200tdi 110 was the same speed.. I have a nanocom and the MAF figures looked good 50 ish idle and 550 on full throttle. So I never thought of changing it, I recently disconnected the MAF as suggested and there was an improvement. I didn't want to buy a genuine one as they are £100 I think so took a punt on non genuine. Night and day the performance, much smoother and revs freely to 4000. Getting a remap soon so I will get the non genuine MAF checked out. Steve |
