Hi guys, first post...
I was surprised to see no mention of the 255/85 16 BFG. Does anyone have a view on these? They are very popular, and expensive, here in Aus due to the extra lift without the with of the 285. Rob |

If you've got an unused set from that long ago then I'd be quite wary about using them, to be honest. It does depend on how they've been stored, but tyres can deteriorate through age even if not used.[/quote]
Hi, To be honest I’m no tyre expert but these Tyre’s look perfect (apart from a little dust) no sign of cracking/perishing etc, tyres are also fitted to a set of modular rims and hold air. How could tyre degradation be determined Originally purchased for a series 2 as a tyre and wheel package but never used, always stored in workshop so no exposure to the sun etc. |

We have a tyre expert on here as a member so hopefully he can give the scientific reason but this question comes up a lot and the actual compound does deteriorate with age irrespective of where or how it is stored. I suppose the question is how much and in what time scale but all tyres are going to be different, it's anyone's call I suppose if they want to buy them or no, type of use etc

TA's 265/75/16 now out of stock until september. KM2's available in 255/85/16 or 265/75/16. What is the best size and why? Q. |

I have 265/75/16. Next time I think I'll have the 255, they are just a bit smaller but will do fine for my usage, a bit of greenlaning and road use. The 265 is just a bit to large for the wheel arches, each time after a bit of muddy lanes I'll end up with a lot of cleaning up Click image to enlarge Cheers, Vincent 1959 Polynorm 1/4 Ton Trailer, Olive Drab Green (sold) 1970 M416 Military Trailer (Camping Trailer Conversion), Epsom Green (sold) 1975 Series III 88 V6, Light Green (sadly sold) 1996 Defender 110 CSW 300 Tdi, Epsom Green (sold) 2000 Freelander 1 TD4 3-drs, Silver (sold) 2006 Freelander 1 TD4 5-drs Facelift Automatic, Tonga Green (sold) MySite |

I run BFG MT in 255/85 flavour.... great size, not silly wide that covers the side of the vehicle in poo all the time, and gives good ground clearance.

My next tyre will be the 255/85 KM2s. I have 265/75 at the moment on a set of steel wheels, and the amount of mud thrown up the side is huge. They also look a little fat/wide, so prefer the taller/thinner 255/85 profile.

I have had my 265/75 16 KM2's for about 500 miles now.
I get a slight vibration through the vehicle from 50mph up to 70. I thought it was due to the tread pattern so wanted to let them have a few miles first. The tyres have supposedly been balanced (bought as a wheel tyre package) and have weights on the inside of the wheels. Has anyone had issues with the KM2 causing a vibration? Or should I get the balancing checked on them? Thanks in advance, Sim |

I have 285/75x16 KM2s and they are perfectly balanced, but they do have an enormous amount of lead weight on some of the rims.
The sheer volume of rubber does make them more difficult to balance than car tyres, but a good tyre fitter will get them right (sometimes it may involve moving them round the rim a bit too). I suggest that you get them rebalanced. You may have problems if you have rims which require the use of adhesive (rather than old-fashioned clip-on) weights since they tend to fall off more easily. With high mileages they may also tend to go out of balance (especially if you drive like a nutter) since you will find the tread blocks crenellate, ie alternate blocks wear differing amounts. This shouldn't be an issue in 500 miles (unless you drive like a raving nutter!) but it is a recognised consequence of hard tarmac driving on mud tyres and the only way to avoid it is to drive more gently. |

A trip to the tyre fitters on the weekend is in order then. I thought it must have been poor balancing as I havent read any complaints on the forum. The vibration has been there ever since I put the new wheels/tyres on, so it can't be my driving (I hope ) Thanks for the reply. (Also 'crenellate' .. what a great word ) |
