I'm having a discussion with Carglass (Autoglass in the UK) about the cost to professionally (i.e. not LR) re-fit/seal my windscreen. It's down with rain all the time here so I can't seal it myself... and my foot is soaking... so I'm just looking at alternatives.
Whether the screen is glued in or not determines the cost and who has to pay if it breaks... MY2011 - any info? Cheers Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Brilliant - but would be better if it didn't leak Cheers Matt p.s. do you happen to know how much a new heated screen costs (approx)? Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

The part number is LR009820 which is 'WITH CLEAR GLASS - COMPLETE, WITH HEATED WINDSCREEN' and is GBP 272.89 + VAT
Should be paying no more than GBP50+VAT for fitting. |

Are you sure it's the screen? Have you looked at the bulkhead to frame seal, bracket seals etc too? Steve.

I can see the water dribbling in just under the windscreen rubber when it's raining, so some is definitely coming in there. I can't tell yet if any is getting through the bulkhead seal - it is wet along the top but that's probably just from under the windscreen rubber above. If the bulkhead seal is leaking, I'm hoping Todger's creeping crack sealant will sort it out (if I can get things dry enough in the work garage... maybe for the time being, run some grease around the edges to keep the water out until it dries up a little and you can tackle the job in the dry, take your time and get all the right sealants ? (sorry not telling you what to do, just that's what i'd do)

As I said, I'm looking at all possibilities over the next few days and that's a good one - it will also tell me if the bulkhead seal is leaking too Actually, if the bulkhead seal is leaking too, keeping it greased might also be a fix for now - unless the grease attacks the foam rubber Also just thought that if Carglass break the screen, I could claim it happened on the road and get my insurance to pay for it Cheers Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. Personally I'd be wary of using grease anywhere near where you will want to be permanently sealing up at a later stage, getting rid of the grease so that the sealant can take effect / bond is likely to be a PITA. Steve.

Exactly what you want (Same as the stuff from Frosts.co.uk) because as it says... "ALWAYS FLEXIBLE ALTHOUGH FORMS A SINK ON THE SURFACE. THIS SEALANT IS USED BETWEEN THE GLASS AND RUBBER AND ALSO THE RUBBER AND BODYWORK TO PREVENT OR TO STOP LEAKAGE" No need to take the rubber out, just seal it and as MOG says avoid grease |

Thanks all - will only use grease in dire emergencies I would have to order Arbomast from UK so I'll check out what e.g. Carglass use here (probably similar). Last questions: 1) If I do get Carglass to do the whole job (they now tell me they can for around 50 quid), do you think I should get a new rubber seal? This one is only 10 months old and I can only find cheapo copies (30 quid) on the German net? 2) If the bulkhead-frame seal is leaking, I have loads of butyl tape I can use to make a permanent flexible barrier covering the foam rubber seal from the outside - is there any reason the seal has to be open to the air? Many thanks Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...
