I give up Matt, sorry but this is driving me nuts. It's good to help people out as others have helped me out in the past but this is ridiculous. It's ALL in the posts and links, what to get, where to get it, and how to do it, backed up by LR's own guide and others that have replied to you in your threadS about it. It's just confusing other people. Last go - It's not my way this IS how you put old style windows in, e.g. feed rubber onto frame, wipe detergent or similar onto rubber to make it slip easier, place window glass up against rubber and use tool to lift rubber over window lip and hey presto your window glass is in. You then seal with sealant, window to rubber and rubber to body then put in your insert if you have one that needs to go in e.g. your alpine windows. Why take it all out especially when the rubbers are only 10 months old. Just put your sealant tube in your caulking gun, cut the nozzle at an angle and squeeze a line of sealant under your rubber. It really is as simple as that.......just messy and fiddly.... Last edited by Zagato on 11th Jan 2012 5:02pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Time for a beer, chill pill and pick up an old sit on lawn mower for my neighbour who wants to get into Lawn Mower racing in Pulborough with his son. Grass must be well kept down there I'd go the Go-Cart route myself, hurry up and grow up son

No mention of using a bit of cord to pull the lip of the seal over the glass or over the frame / body [depending on the window] Zag, I thought you knew everything
There's a post that I submitted years ago [judging how young my lad looks in one or two] in the LR4x4.com tech archive regarding windscreen fitting to the last TD5 I had. I've done the job quite a few times myself but as the screen was being replaced under warranty and the guy didn't mind having photos taken I snapped away while he got on with it. I don't have time to copy my text but here are a selection of photos [hopefully roughly in the right order] which might throw some light on the subject form Matt: Doesn't show any sealant there but it was used. Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated Steve. Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Yes used to use cord until I took out a rear SAAB 96 window (Very curved as you know being MOG!) and it just exploded in my hands when I was carrying it I was a real coward after that as they are tricky to get hold of and got the window fitter to put my SAAB windows back in and take out all my TD5 windows due to perished rubbers. Going by the price of heated front windscreens I think I'd bottle out again if it ever needed to come out

Zag. Sticking to Defenders [or Series even] the worse ones I've found are the Alpine lights in hardtops. I remember one Series 3 88" station wagon I had which I removed all the glass to respray the hardtop, when it came to refitting the Alpines I got one back in ok but the other side pinged out of the aperture and smashed on landing gouging the new paintwork on the hardtop side on the way down Steve.

Yeah they are horrible going by the hassle the fitter had trying to get them back in, I wouldn't even attempt it, hell of a job, he was really giving them a thump

Dear Mr Zagato, dear Mr MOG and others
Having drained you of all your strength and pumped you (and MOG and...) for absolutely every scrap of knowledge on windscreen sealing, I would like to say an enormous "THANK YOU" My ACF-50 arrived today and (as it's actually dry in our work garage) I did my cappings and so can re-fit the chequerplate tomorrow knowing my beloved Defender won't fall to pieces behind it. I am now armed with enough information to confidently (really important when trying to explain like an idiot in German) discuss the options with Carglass and find out if I can get the correct (I now know what that is) sealant from them or elsewhere. I admit I am a bit of an information parasite but I hope that one day I will gain enough experience to be of help to others on this forum (apart from giving travel/hotel/skiing advice for Bavaria, to which all are welcome). I can also prescribe an extensive "chill pill" collection... but only in Germany (sorry) Thanks again and I wish all participants a wonderful evening Dr. Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Do these sealants work when it's wet?
Reason I ask is, I replaced my windscreen seal back in October, and it seems the water is quite happily leaking in through it. So if I get some of this screen sealer stuff, can I squeeze it in under both libs of the seal even though there is currently lots of water sitting behind there? I figure the only way to dry it out properly would be to remove the screen and then re-fit it with the sealant in place? |

Great thread - reason I just signed up to this site .
My 4 month old, MY11, 90 has multiple leaks from various holes and seals on the front bulkhead. Hoping the dealer will sort... but have downloaded the ingress guide (talks about 12 seater so not Puma specific?) and am also gonna do all the stuff in the 'Zag Corrosion Guide ' as soon as things dry up a bit. Thanks guys. 2011 Defender 90 SW 2006 Discovery 3 HSE Last edited by AlpsLandy on 12th Jan 2012 10:45am. Edited 1 time in total |
