Sure it's the eingine and not the gearbox?
On pumas, a 2" lift (more or less) causes this rattling in the gearbox due to the steeper angle in the drivetrain.

the scangauge II is able to display the EGT on 2.2 Defenders.
Create a new xgauge wth CANSF-protocol and use this parameters (metric):

The standard rears from 90y TD5 will fit and are much softer than the TD4.
It's low cost and worth a try.

The rear springs of the Puma Defender 90 are really stiff.
A softer spring (200-230lbf/in) will give a smoother ride.
