2011 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Stornoway Grey

New rear dampers

I'm looking at improving the choppy ride from the defender. The car is predominantly empty when used and all I'm after is a softer ride, I live in the countryside and the roads are not the best to say the least.
After reading a number of posts it seems it's a choice between bilsten and the Koni heavy trac. It seems the Koni are more expensive at around £110 as opposed to £65. Is there that much difference in ride and quality between the 2 brands?
If I go for bilsteins allows me to buy something else too

Replacement shocks alone won't make a great difference in ride quality .... so buy whatever you are happy with.
Terrafirma are only about £35 each and will do just as good a job as the koni etc for your purposes

Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

No, but good dampers will help with a choppy ride as they control bounce and rebound.

As above, I'd also avoid Terrafirma too but each to their own.
Have you checked the condition of the bushes?

Koni or Bilstein seem to be the best... have a quick search and there are a number of threads on here on this subject.

You won't go wrong with either Darren. Bilstein was my choice for the happy bus, but I always had Koni on the cossies.

I am a big fan of the Monroe Adventure. I have had them on both Defenders and Discoveries and they performed well both on and off road.

The rear springs of the Puma Defender 90 are really stiff.

A softer spring (200-230lbf/in) will give a smoother ride.

The standard rears from 90y TD5 will fit and are much softer than the TD4.

It's low cost and worth a try.

Terrafirmas TF014 or Tf015 wiil do.

But be warned! If you start with springs and dampers, it's a neverending story!

Have you tried messing with tyre pressures? If your shocks are in good shape you may be able to help the situation running a bit lower tyre pressures, I did that and it improved the drive no end. Long term I will get a set of better shocks and maybe springs but at present lowering the pressures have helped. 110 Hardtop
