Also check the exhaust manifold to cylinder head joint, if the fasteners are loose the gasket can vibrate and make really weird noises.

Hi, blackwolf/Crete Simon I had a really good look this afternoon after about 30 minutes of trying to get all of those bolts out securing the heat shield.π‘π€¬. Everything looked secure all nuts was tight and no signs of soot anywhere.π€

It is not always obvious to identify a slightly loose bolt or soot traces in the area of the exhaust manifold/turbo.
My experience on my 2.4 is that a very small leakage of exhaust gas with almost no visible soot trace, can create a very loud siren like noise. I had this high pitched noise on my 2.4, that was audible only under certain acceleration circumstances. In effect there was only very little soot visible at one corner of the gasket between the manifold and turbo, but having no better lead or idea, I changed the gasket for the improved Nakatanenga HD gasket. That sealed it for good and got rid of the noise. It has never come back since, and that was 2 yrs / 20 000 kms ago. /Mat The only potential soot trace I could see is circled in red (note: on this picture, I had already started to remove the bolts to swap the gasket): Click image to enlarge The new Nakatanenga HD gasket in place: Click image to enlarge |

Thank you mat landy I'll have another look tomorrow and really have a good look and get a new gasket ordered because it's very annoying. And it never did it before the turbo failed.πβΉοΈ

So today I set about removing turbo heat shield to try find where this whistle/siren noise might be coming from but all look well no signs of soot anywhere no loose nuts. So what could I check next you hear it most in 1st and 2nd at about 2000 revs. βΉοΈπ€

Is there any gasket between turbo and manifold. Photos a bit blurry but line seems very thin. Mat lads pics show a thick naka gasket a thin standard one but yours appears to be none existent.

As per this post https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic84690.html there indeed seems to be no gasket on the 2.2 between turbo/manifold. The picture I shared are from my 2.4, which had a gasket between turbo/manifold from factory.

Mine has a gasket between turbo and exhaust manifold Dec 2012 2.2 registered jan 2013. The head was replaced at about 60k so the dealer might have put a gasket in then. I have recently replaced the turbo core and replaced the gasket. I have heard them make a very aloud siren noise when the egr to exhaust manifold is not tight. Itβs like when you blow a blade of grass between thumbs. The gasket vibrates and makes a hell of a noise

It's just a strange one it drives perfect pulls really well returns good mpg and has been the same for about 6000 miles it's just annoying as it's not always been there only started doing it just as turbo failed.βΉοΈππ€
