Looks like it is going ahead. Can't see manufacturers investing any money in existing model as the payback time will be too small to recoup the outlay. Also anyone on a low paid job will never be be able to afford a new car as electric cars are not cheap. Anyway here it is.

I’m sure they will be supplied FOC via some bonkers benefit scheme that tax payers will need to fund

The chances of the same Tory government being in place by the time the ban takes effect is Nil, so their virtue signalling at this stage is totally worthless.

I think that 2029 and possibly 2028 will be a bumper year for new petrol and diesel cars. I don't think that masses of people will take up electric versions, certainly not to purchase outright. I would not be surprised to find smaller companies really focusing on the second hand stock and maybe offering full refurbishment of decent cars, a bit like what's happened with our defenders.
My 110, fully refurbished and modernised, to a degree, is 39 years old and used regularly, our main car is a new one at 13 years old and both daughters are using 20 year old cars daily. There's nothing wrong with the right old car and we'll see plenty of increasingly older examples used, in my opinion. I love old stuff, as do plenty of other people. |

I agree with your sentiments but over here there is a snag...insurance companies. I do not know how much longer our 2008 Puma will be insured. I got it renewed this month but most insurers will not insure anything over 15 years of age. One company makes a big thing of insuring vehicles up to 17 years old.
When our 110 200 tdi hit 19 years old no body would cover it. There was only one company quoting to cover and then they stopped. The 110 200 tdi is now on a vintage policy along with a 2.25 1982 series 111. Over here vintage is 30 years of age. Suits the government and garages as it makes people buy cars but it is not very "green". 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

EU has set the deadline to 2035. So a little more time for OEMs to invest in new models - albeight only LHD, that is
"most insurers will not insure anything over 15 years of age." It is about time you kicked your car insurers down to where they belong. With all this "write off" scam and now this, it's ridiculous. |

Election in 2024 will probably be a Labour win. What chance of Starmer being only the 2nd labour leader to win a 2nd term? New Conservative government in 2028 or 2029. That said, virtua signalling and Labour? They won't extend, more likely that they make it immediate! |

“There's nothing wrong with the right old car and we'll see plenty of increasingly older examples used, in my opinion”
I’m afraid my opinion is exactly the opposite: as more towns and cities ban older cars or make it prohibitively expensive to enter them, the value of older vehicles will plummet and in time you won’t be able to give ‘em away! Even though I too “love old stuff, as do plenty of other people”, and one can question whether or not an old car - even Vintage or Veteran - used occasionally is more environmentally damaging than the manufacture of a new EV, meaningful changes in timetable or exceptions are unlikely. Which Politician will risk being accused of championing rich friends to continue running their Bugatti or Bentley, while Fred and Flo and their six kids have had to dump their old VW Transporter and now have to walk? We're already seeing in London the increase in older car prices as they qualify for the low emission zone. I suspect this trend will continue and a move towards the Cuban model as a lot of folks who can afford old cars now will not be able to afford electric vehicles which at a certain age require battery packs to be changed.

i think there will be a big U turn, some places like high rise flats, wont be able to charge cars, a long with some areas, where some houses, don't have a front gardens. The picture is a Lot bigger than they think, ok some manufactures are making electric models of their current range, and binning off diesel counter parts. But i recon Hybrid will be the way forward. It can and is being done - but will the politicians listen?
https://www.wrc.com/en/more/beyond-rally/i...able-fuel/ Jona Siebel, WRC Promoter CEO, said: “The technology behind sustainable fuels is changing rapidly. Therefore, a lot of effort was invested to find the best available solution – and we can be proud of the outcome. The chosen blend of advanced biofuel and innovative e-fuel components makes WRC a real leader in sustainable motor sports with everyday cars. The WRC is a tremendous platform to develop and validate this innovative fuel in mass-produced vehicles, on real roads and under all circumstances.
