P is the 'parking brake on the tranny.......
Handbrake does what it says on the tin - you should use both when parked |

Have a practise, with the engine running and car parked on a very slight incline try selecting drive, neutral and reverse while also pressing P at different points. You can feel the transmission engaging and disengaging and you can hear the parking brake being applied and released, sometimes by pressing the P button, sometimes when pressing the brake pedal. Select neutral with the brakes off and the car will start to roll but when you press the P button you can hear the parking brake engage.
All you need to do when parking is press the P button. |

The handbrake on the lower dash is an 'E' brake or 'Emergency Brake'.
Years ago at the Land Rover Experience half day when the wife got a new LR I asked that question and the answer and demonstration given by the instructor is that in an emergency situation and you need to pull the E brake it locks all four wheels not just the rears as per a traditional hand brake lever (car not LR product). The idea being is that the vehicle brakes in a straight line and thus (hopefully) safer and more predicable. Hope that helps. The half day experience is a great way of asking questions, not just following the instructors lead. |

It will do that function if you pull it while moving, but it’s also just a normal handbrake/parking brake switch. However you never need to use it normally as the car does it for you whenever you put it in or out of park.
I’ve never touched mine in 62k except for putting the calipers in service mode so I could change the discs and pads. |

okay thank you it's good to know the proper function.
So if you apply the handbrake while driving does the vehicle do a full emergency stop? Would the same thing happen if you pressed the "P" button on top of the shift lever? (makes note not to drive with hand on the lever....) |

All in the manual:
Click image to enlarge I’m not sure what would happen if you hit P while driving. I’d like to think it would be clever enough not to try and put the transmission in park at 70mph, but I’ve not got the guts to try it and find out! |

Like Retroanaconda says hopefully the car is intelligent enough not to allow the P mode to be engaged when moving and you just get a bong if you try to do it, but if you want to give it a try let us know how you get on
Years ago when on a Land Rover experience day in a Disco 4 the instructor said that the EPB lever could be pulled by a passenger if the driver was having a medical episode and lost control, that would bring the vehicle to a halt. On the D4 the EPB lever was in the centre console so it was easy to reach by a passenger, not sure how a passenger could operate the Defender one though Cheers Ian -------------------- 22MY Defender 110 D200 SE, Fuji White. If you are in low range and using a TR program the auto engage function of the parki/ hand brake doesn’t always engage, depending on the program selected you have to manually operate the hand brake using the switch to the right of the steering column. Both my 202- First Edition and now in my 2023 HSE are the same in this respect.
One question for those used to old style auto gearboxes - in this ZF box does P also lock the gearbox on pressing P like it did when selecting P with the old PRND lever operated selectors? Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come 2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

lt looks like they are two separate things.
lf l engage the "handbrake" and don't press the "P" button the handbrake is applied but l get a "GEARBOX NOT IN PARK" warning. Then if l start the engine and select "D" the vehicle doesn't move. lf l release the handbrake it starts to move. lf l've pressed "P" as well, when l release the handbrake the vehicle doesn't move. |

Yes, putting the gearbox in park will engage the locking pawl and stop the car moving independently of the handbrake/parking brake. Just like almost every automatic car out there.
Worth noting that the parking pawl is not very strong and should not be relied upon to hold the vehicle on a slope. |

Heavens l've been relying on it to hold the vehicle on customers drives and some have been pretty steep, one with a Porsche parked at the bottom.
That wouldn't have been a good end to the day. However if l shut down the vehicle without applying the handbrake the symbol comes up anyway on the dash !! But when l open the door l get the "transmission not in park" warning So is the handbrake automatically engaged? lt's the same symbol that appears when "P" is pressed lt couldn't be more confusing if they tried. Yes l've read that.
But it refers continually to "EPB" Does that mean the transmission brake (P) or handbrake or are they the same, despite it being possible to not apply one of them when parked, and get the "GEARBOX NOT IN PARK" warning despite the "P" indicating on the dash as being engaged Click image to enlarge |
