2014 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 SW Fuji White

You are definitely dealing with a leak between compression & Water, could be Head-gasket, cracked head or cracket cylinder wall! 2002 130 td5 Gameviewer

Thanks everyone who took the time to add to this.

Just to close this off - it was the head gasket!

I had no symptoms of what you would usually expect when the head gasket goes / going. Everything was normal except for the over heating going uphill in 6th. The RELD test was negative for gases in the system. I didnt loose any coolant. I did have white smoke at start up which I thought was a possible injector issue but thats gone now and my injectors are fine.

I hope this helps people in the future.

Hi, still trying to find the Issue with my defender having power loss issues!!
How did you finally determine it was head gasket?

@yesjus I pretty much replaced everything it could have been!

Off the top of my head that was:

New radiator
New thermostat
New CHT sensor
New VCV
New water pump
New fuel rail
New air filter
New coolant caps!
MAF & MAP were less that 12 months old
New coolant

I cleaned everything with contact spray.

I made sure the EGR was properly blanked off and removed.

I also replaced something at the back of the engine although can’t remember what this was now.

I did a number of RELD tests at different times (cold start, warmed up, half warm etc) and they were all negative.

Being able to see the temp in real-time helped. I had a nanocom wired up and when I saw the temp rising I could react to it.

When this first started I would find myself in the outside lane on the motorway and suddenly I’d have no throttle and the speed would just start dropping. Wasn’t the best feeling! It would feel like you’ve just driven into a massive headwind! The temp gauge would be in the red but would start dropping after a few seconds. When it got back to middle the power would come back on and it was back to normal. This only really happened in 6th gear accelerating up hill!

It was possible to catch it if I saw the temp rising. I would slow and drop down to 5th and then the gauge would drop down.

Trying to diagnose this was super frustrating!!

I did take the car to a couple of garages (landrover indies) and both mentioned head gasket.

I’ve now done about 4000 miles since the HG was done and it’s all back to normal. I do now run an ultragauge so that I can see speed,rpm,turbo psi,fuel rail and temp!

Good luck with sorting your car! I didn’t want to do the HG first as no one was really sure it was that. Having read most of the internet looking for solutions I pretty much exhausted the list of what it could be. On the plus side it’s like I have an almost new engine now and I know this car intimately now! 🤣

Working my way through the new parts at the moment!!
Currently I’ve changed the VCV with no change however I’ve just done the CHT sensor and fingers crossed it hasn’t done it since so hoping it’s that!!

Thanks for this super useful story. My tdci is going to the garage on Thursday. Running hot when driving motorway in 6th gear, and within seconds after idling I can drive again. Off motorway no issues. Whenever revs are up it cools quickly. Almost everything is done. I'm fearing the gasket. Seems like there a vacuum whenever I open the expansion. engine heat up quickly when slowing down (letting go of gas, nu keep gear)

Car came back from the shop and is fixed. Head gasket. Nothing to be found in cooling fluid.

I’m happy.

Recently I had a similar issue with 6th Gear 120km/h and the car pushing coolant out of the header tank. Believed it to be blown head gasket but on removal can not really see any obvious place where the gasket was leaking.

When your gasket was leaking did you notice any issue / mark on the gasket when it was removed to show where it was leaking?

Hi Nick, yeah, that was visible on the inside. And even though there was a leakage there were no exhausts to be found in the fluid. What did happen though is theat fluid was ‘leaking’ away. Into the cilinder apparently, nothing to found in the oil. It was a leakage to the front of the engine.
