I don't see the point of bucket seats in a Defender. Bucket seats are designed to hold you in place during high G corners, the Defender just does not do high G cornering. Bucket seats take up too much space and are generally less padded and not so comfortable on long journeys.

I have never found the standard seats in a Defender anything other than perfect for the job. I would say the TD5 era seats were more comfortable than the Puma era seats though.
If I was to change anything I might be tempted with the extended base. |

Hi, my neighbour had leather bucket seats in his TD5 Alive 90 and they were dreadful in my opinion, they were very uncomfortable and as mentioned not that easy to get in and out of cheers Paul

I've got Scheel seats, one of the best purchases I made.
Tip: But if you have an internal whoop from a roll cage, many seats (ie Recaro's) won't fit a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover |

Which type do you have? And did they need special fixings? Thanks Ed

I needed new seats when I "did up" the 110 for my Daughters wedding.
I got some buckets as they were a good price at the time. Problem is they wear out quick on the side as you have to climb and slide over them. The other problem as mentioned above they foul the internal roll cage. Oh, and if they are tall you need to re-position seat belts or extend them. I had to mess about to get them in. Top end ones like recardo are good but I would choose one of the comfort seats from Exmoor next time. |

And do they fit with an internal roll cage hoop? |

Yep they fit (just). You have to remove a knob (very easy, just slides on an of) to slide the seat past the post. But you only have to do that if you are (just like we) very tall and very short The knob is for adjusting the upright part of the seat, so we don't bother anymore to put the knob on.
Other advantage of the LR edition is the fact that the side of the chair are lower than the regular ones. So you don't have to climb "over" them. But still giving enough support. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover |

I assume you have never sat in a defender with genuine Recaros in there?

Not in mine, because I've got an internal hoop so they don't fit.
I sat in other cars in them. Also great seats, comes down to personal preference I suppose. I find them a bit racier so I prefer the Scheelmans. But if I hadn't had a fitting problem I probably would have chosen the Recaro's. I only started looking for alternatives when we concluded the Recaro's wouldn't fit. a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover |
