Odd that it looks as though the roll of the hinges would still be in the way if you could remove the hinge pin.
I'd be inclined to drill new holes further away from the roll of the hinge. |

Good thought but there is not enough meat left to do that, and I don't think the rivet gun would still fit...

If the rivet will fit you can use a tubular spacer the diameter of the rivet head between rivet and mandrel when setting the rivet.
