CPS woes
Hi,
Seem to be having Crank position sensor woes

TD5 was having difficulty starting so had a loook at the existing CPS. The "pin" in the middle was worn flat to the outer plasitc casing which was also worn so replaced with new sensor ... turned key and started 1st time, switched it off and on again, started 1st time. Moved landy to another parking spot,ran for 45 mins, switched off and tried to start ... not a peep ....
took sensor out and had a look and the "pin" in the end was definitely smaller... looked on lrworkshop and there's supposed to be washer between sensor and bellhousing wasn't one present checked round and nothing had falledn off ....bought sensor no 3 and the washer and fitted them, although TBF it was thinner than i expected....
... and because of all the cable movement, one of the wired in the plug broke Sad Soldered a new plug onto end of cable adding about 3 " to length of harness ( heat shrink round each solder joint then some tape then bigger heat shrink then some conduit). Turned key, 4 short turns of the stater motor.... started ... runs really well... ran for 45 mins, up to normal running temp, switched off tried again ... nope wont start.

Got a Lynx evo had a look for fault codes , none applicable ( only ones for kit thats not present on car along with a cam bus error).

So know that you can get interference from starter motor and it might be that, do have a new starter motor to

Anyone else hd these issues? Just wondering if a thicker washer on the CPS might be in order. Think the sensors are OEM.

Anyone else seen these issues ? She runs really well ... if onlt she would start.

Other things done

new injector seals
fuel pessure regulator ( and checked that 4 bar perssure out of it)
new fuel filter housing and associatred valve( old one fell appart)
new fuel pump
no visible fuel leaks at filter or fpr

You can rule out the starter motor interference by tow/bump starting it. 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

Czech Republic 1999 Defender 130 Td5 HCPU Baltic Blue
Once I have repaired engine ECU with broken resistor in CPS signal circuit - it was working, but was extremly sensitive to "the right" voltage from CPS. After repair, it was working with nearly anything.
So just to be sure - try another engine ECU. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂ­nek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Smile sadly because of where its parked i have to start it to get somewhere where i can tow start it Smile

Not sure if im at that point in the testing .. but I'll keep it in mind Smile

And problem fixed ..!

Thre good news is that along the way I've fixed a whole batch of things and done some preventating maintenance

in the end the bad starting problems were down to noise from the starter motor. Replaced that and starts on 1st turn of key ... more than once ... yay!! Santa - 1977 Series 3 - new chassis, tub, disc brakes,SU Carb

Good. I was going to say, when you mentioned 'nothing', the CPS does not control the starter, it controls the firing (diesel). All resolved and you have some spare sensors for your collection.
