You can rule out the starter motor interference by tow/bump starting it. 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

Once I have repaired engine ECU with broken resistor in CPS signal circuit - it was working, but was extremly sensitive to "the right" voltage from CPS. After repair, it was working with nearly anything.
So just to be sure - try another engine ECU. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo |

And problem fixed ..!
Thre good news is that along the way I've fixed a whole batch of things and done some preventating maintenance in the end the bad starting problems were down to noise from the starter motor. Replaced that and starts on 1st turn of key ... more than once ... yay!! Good. I was going to say, when you mentioned 'nothing', the CPS does not control the starter, it controls the firing (diesel). All resolved and you have some spare sensors for your collection.
