Sorry Gents. Been away for a bit. Took your advice and glad I did.
Turns out it was a loose bolt. Unwinding every mile. Had the car in for tracking a few months back at ATS and they did such a poor job they didn’t torque the bolts back up. Could have been spectacularly bad. Changed a drop arm at the same time and now have straight steering with no play… |

I think the nut that keeps the drop arm on the steering house. I had that before. I just had a little play as the locking plate wasn't bend tight enough. But in my case it was play while driving not just to one side. The drop arm could move up and down a bit. Roel

ATS would not have messed with the drop arm during an alignment check, or at least should not. Drag link lock bolts, perhaps?

How many miles has your truck done pcm?I am also very interested in which loose nut caused your particular symptoms? |

It was the bolts holding the track arm on. They were working loose causing the steering wheel to rotate.
I added a few shiny bits a few month back and had it 4wheel aligned afterwards. Wish I hadn’t. ATS are having none of it. Say it would have happened anywhere. Just glad I didn’t rotate the steering wheel on rhe splines. |

Shiny ...Sumo Bars?...... so just the track rod ends then .everything else was ok?which branch of ats did you use as im in your area and i would like to avoid them if possible!

Although I suspect it was ATS I’m not going to specifically blame them as it “could” have happened afterwards.
I did however visit the branch in team valley. |

I strongly suspect they failed to tighten the drag link clamp bolts/locknuts after doing the tracking. This is why I do all my own car repairs, you can't trust anybody because it is often impossible to tell the difference between idiots and experts until it's too late! And as an additional point, you can't 4wheel align a Defender so that's a con! It's just the tracking and then steering wheel position, nothing is adjustable at the back axle. Tracking is stupidly simple to DIY on your driveway with a couple of metal rods and some mole grips or similar to clamp them together. No actual measurements or numbers required. I should really make a YouTube vid of it, would make me famous |

Seriously make that video.. it may not make you famous but will make lots of people (like myself) a lot more knowledgable. I was useless until I bought a defender and it’s slowly making me into a mechanic. With the help of this forum.
I’ve done servicing, brakes, electrical work and would have done tracking if I’d have found that video. 😇 |

I think it must have been shortening itself (unless the vehicle is LHD, which I doubt).

On early LandRovers, the nut on that clamp was of the Aerotight design (not a nyloc) so they took heat and oil contamination consideration in the design. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
