From the workshop manual... Top image.
Click image to enlarge As for the placement it is usually found on top of the chassis infront of the drivers side seat box. Parallel or perpendicular it does not matter as long as it is secure and out of the way. I take it you are converting from drum brakes to disc braked rear axle then? Ah, now. I don't mean to be contrary on purpose, but I think that fella needs to be fitted to the front of the drivers footwell, horizontally.
There's another (earlier?) thing that sits on the chassis leg, driver's side. I'll see if I can find a pic of mine. Donald 1994 Defender 300Tdi 110 SW - owned since 2002 - 230k miles and going strong (The 'rolling restoration' or tinkering thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic58538.html ) 2000 Range Rover P38 4.0L V8 in the past.. RR classic - fitted with 200Tdi 1984 RR classic - V8 with ZF auto box 1993 Discovery 300Tdi not to mention the minis and the Type 2 VW camper... |

You are not wrong Don, I was thinking of the earlier bias values.
This one does have to be level (horizontal) but it can still be found either on top of the chassis in front of the seat box (footwell) or to the side of the chassis. It depends on the era of Defender and type of Defender (90, 110 or 130). When I was looking for a brake line kit for Miffy I had to go through all the permutations with the seller to make sure I had the right kit. This is the later biasing valve the earlier one was a weird triangular affair that was located between the chassis rails under a body mount. |

Ah I knew I had a post - https://www.defender2.net/forum/post931357.html - Page 23, you can see the location of the bias valve on Miffy (2003 TD5 110).
