I binned it, because it's an utterly useless thing. I have also altered my wiring so that I can squirt as long as I want before starting the wipers and make sure the screen is properly wet.

Heated nozzles would be useful but I'd also like heated wipers for this time of year. I seem to have more problems with the wipers going rigid than the nozzles freezing.

That's a good idea Blackwolf. Fancy sharing how you modified the wiring?

I can sympathise about the stiff wiper blades. In other countries there are specialised winter wiper blades with softer rubber and/or double blades per wiper... But as we are British changing tyres in autumn is too much so wipers is a long long shot...

Easy, remove the wiper "relay" (which is actually a timer unit not a relay) and remove or bend flat the blade for receptacle 6 on the connector. This is the feed from the washer switch into the "relay" which triggers the wipe function.

Since wash and wipe are on the same stalk it is very easy to squirt as long as you wish then click the wipers on.

New required pump methinks.

A Disco2 headlamp washer pump is what I used with my Optimill installation. Easily and cheaply available due to the number of Disco2s being broken.

Right - my brain is hurting with this one.

1. New column stalk fitted.

2. New pump sourced.

3. Fitted - nothing happening. Been across everything with a volt meter - 12v showing at the connector that plugs into pump but it does not run.

4. Rigged up a way to run pump from a spare battery - runs fine.

5. Pulled the Optimal relay - nothing at the pump connector, plug it back in - 12v but pump does not run.

6. When the engine is running - 14v showing at the connector but pump does not run.

What am I missing here? Rgds.

Chris

Is the polarity correct in the pump connector? and have you checked the Earth is good?

Polarity is ok - worked fine for over 12 months.

I did suspect it might be an earth issue - there is an earth lead on the Optimal supplied loom supplement. I will have a look (when it stops raining.....). Rgds.

If I recall the earth wire is quite short on that loom so I expect you have fitted it to the bodywork some place. As I have done. It is worth dismantling it, cleaning it up and refitting with some contact grease (vaseline would do) to prevent it corroding as quickly again. If it is that mind...

The only reason I ask is that when I did mine it resulted in a night versus day scenario - where my washer jet, as old and discoloured as it is, was like new.
I didn’t expect it to make such a difference.

No I did not. Is that a relatively easy thing to do on the Td5? Presumably its located somewhere down near the pumps? 2005 Td5 90 XS

Mine is located under the bonnet on the near side close to where the wing meets the bulkhead (next to the heater plenum). You will see the pipework heading toward the bulkhead. It’s simply a ‘pull off push on’ and they are very cheap. As Blackwolf suggests (and perhaps I should have) you can completely remove it.

I only mentioned it as I was thinking I’d have to commit to a new nozzle/pump etc. but thought I’d just change it to see if it made any difference as they get clogged up and the diaphragm distorts.

It really did shock me just how much of a difference it made - which in reality demonstrated just how ineffective the old one was. It is now better than when I bought the Landy.

Worth a try…

I shall locate it and remove it then, thanks Screbble! Fingers crossed that will resolve the lack of squirty pressure. 2005 Td5 90 XS
