Who's changed their oil
....before the recommended 2 years/20,000 mile interval?

l questioned the dealer and they said it "wasn't necessary" but there's no way l'm leaving it for 20,000 miles on such a high tech engine.

l'll do an interim oil change at 10,000

What do others think?

There's no way I go as long as recommended by LR regarding oil service. I'll do my first at 5K then every 7500 after that. Cheap insurance at a minimum. There's a long discussion with varying opinions on the landrover.com site.

I had mine changed by the dealer at 11000 miles/ 12 months in June 2021. They argued like mad that it wasn’t necessary so I told them
A) I know the awful failure rate of Ingenium engines due to oil dilution
B ) if I want an oil change done more often than recommended I’ll get it done and I’m offering you the job rather than going to an indie LR specialist at half the price and still using JLR parts and oil…….
C) Will I do damage to the engine changing the oil early?

They booked the car in and did the job in the end and I nearly fell over when the bill was presented - £120 was way less than I had been quoted initially………… turned out LR was doing cut price oil/ filter changes and Adblu refills - basically the cost of the labor and VAT were zero and it was returned washed and cleaned inside too! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

And that is the con of buying the five year service package upfront when JLR (UK) knows full well that the average client will return the vehicle at the end of year three. Hence only one service in Year two.

It’s cash flow that is re-invested, looks good at the shareholders meetings.

I had mine done at 12months at main dealer £199 inc. They were insistent it wasn't required but I insisted, When it was done the service manager came over and agreed it was a wise move Rolling Eyes

If you don’t intend to keep the vehicle outside it’s warranty period then why waste money on interim oil service?.. stick to JLR recommendations.

If the vehicle is “ a Keeper” then it might be worth it to you.

I’ve done 6000 miles and am thinking of doing mine in the next week or so. I’m old school and just don’t believe oil will last as long as they say.

As above l guess.

Why spend more than necessary when the vehicle will never be out of warranty in your ownership.

However this may in part explain the issues with older vehicles and things like turbo failure, main bearing issues etc

For instance
A three year old Defender is returned at the end of lease....the first oil change was done at 21,000 and then it's put through the auctions by the main dealer.
Bought by a used car dealer it has a second oil change at 37,000 using cheap bulk oil and an aftermarket filter.

The second owner doesn't change the oil for a further 18,000 miles because the "car dealer did it before delivery"

At five years it gets a third oil change, at a local "do it all" garage and then after seven years (and another 15,000) the turbo fails. That's changed but then it fails the MOT because it's burning oil and the DPF is knackered.

At that point the vehicle's future is at risk. Quoted £2,000 for a new DPF the owner has it bypassed which gets the Defender running but throws a warning on the dash.

At the next MOT it's deemed to need an engine, which has the owner screaming all over the forums that their "low mileage Defender is rubbish" and that Land Rover "clearly didn't design the engine properly" and they will be seeking compensation through the courts

Problem is… many of us remember an era of mineral oils and engines you had to “ bed in”
Reality is…things have moved on.

Synthetic Oils simply do not degrade like a mineral oil.
Engines are built to much tighter tolerances than years ago.
Gone are the days of a sump full of metal particles

All manufacturers have moved forward with their technology
We have to move with them if we own a modern vehicle.

Having been involved with engine manufacture and load testing engines for 1000s of miles I am happy to follow manufacturers recommendations.

I change mine myself halfway in between the official 21k services.

Oil is cheap. Engines are expensive.

on our P400 we change the oil at 12,000 KM's on average,

6 months and 12,500 kms interim oil and filters changed (oil and air filters)
12 months annual service completed at 22,0000 KM.s
24 months annual service completed at 35,000 KM's (left it longer than 6 months we had planned
as the Landie had hardly moved)

seems more sensible interval than the LR one based upon Australia's climate and driving conditions yet another pommie bar steward down under

Yes l think there's no harm done from changing the oil and filter every 10,000 miles

I realise oil, and engines have moved on. It will also depend of course on the type of use the vehicle gets.
