2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS DCPU Stornoway Grey

Cold start issues

Hi all any help would he appreciated

Def 90 2.2 35k miles
Just started to struggle on cold start ,never had previous issues
Turns over but takes a few secs to catch and seems lumpy
Glowplugs only illuminate for 2/3 secs even at -8 ,i am sure this used to be longer?
Battery fully charged
Only other issue is seems to take a long time to come to full heat ,drove home last night -5 on A roads still not to temp 5 miles later but this has been a longer term issue and previously used a rad muff which helped
I am thinking faulty CHT as i think this controls glowplugs?
How difficult to swap out?,glow plugs look a nightmare
Any help appreciated

We have had unusually cold weather this month. Are the glow plugs still the original ones? 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS.

Yes original and i have also heard they are used for DPF burnoff as well to ignite the injected diesel so may cause more wear i suppose
Any other 2.2 owners can let me know how long glowplug light is supposed to be on for?

Interesting, my 2014 2.2 has been the same during this cold weather. Mine does have the original glow plugs...

One thing I have noticed is that the problems were worst when I filled up the tank with diesel from a shell filling station. I normally use the local Tesco, which is what I have now and it started with little issue this morning, despite the fact it's probably the coldest it's been so far this winter.

I know you say the battery is fully charged but it could still be the cause. Batteries hate cold weather. Try using some jump leads from another battery and see how it reacts. My Saab 2.2 diesel showed exactly the same problem, in cold weather, battery showing full and it really struggled. New battery and all was back to normal.

I've had the same issue the last couple of mornings, but I know I've got at least one glowplug that has come up as not working on a fault code before, so I've always just put it down to that.

I have recently replaced the battery so I've ruled that out from my issue 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone
2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone
2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW

Mines been the same, I’m not too worried really cold weather. The longer they are parked up the more likely too as battery voltage drops back more ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

If you use an odb2 code reader you should see diagnostic trouble codes for the glow plugs if they are faulty. I.e P0380 / P0670. You can also check resistance of glow plug, IIRC it will be circa 0.7 Ohm if ok.

However it’s more likely to be an ageing / low battery.

My 2.2 has glow plug light on for circa 3 seconds when it’s very cold.

Re warming up, remember diesels do take longer than petrol, and in the cold I bet you have the heater on hot at full blast, sucking heat from the engine plus your engine Is surrounded by cold air. Also you are probably driving slower and at lower revs due to slippery roads. So a combination of those things results in 5 plus mins to get to temp, which seems reasonable given the circumstances.

Not quite sure on Land Rover but as a previous Ford Diesel Tech the glow plugs continued to be powered for quite some time once the glow plug light goes out to assist in cold running. Many makes do this Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

Don’t forget aging starter motors as well is a factor and possible loose battery clamps and main grounding point. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

What new battery did you replace it with Rosco?
I need one also being 5 years old and slow to start.

A battery, if not left to drain to very low on lots of occasions should not need replacing after just 5 years.

However if you have a Puma you won’t get better than a Varta LED95 ( Leisure, EFB (enhanced flooded battery) Dual purpose 95 amp hour) 850 CCA battery.

It’s the upgraded version of the original LR fitted battery.
