Finally got to bearings last night. Fortunately they were all still in the right place and not spun but some white metal had been deposited on the crank journals. The turbo is toast and the oil pump gear turns but the pump doesn’t do anything. Bores are ok but will get a hone and new rings. Crank is at the top end of tolerances even after a home polish with little to no damage visible after removing the white metal with 2500 grit paper. I’ve seen worse sold as new so fairly happy.
Seems the turbo being starved of oil has slowed me down and stopped me before any mega damage was done to the crank or rods. I will start to post pics as I rebuild. It’s just a pile of very oily parts at the moment |

Click image to enlarge Crank is getting there Bearings, pump gaskets, sealants ordered. Approx £350 so far. I’ll need a clutch maybe and a timing chain cover. Not the massive disaster I was anticipating |

One piston is dead. It had deposited metal inside the bore. Weirdly it has peeled off with a razor. There are no scratches on the bore. A hone before rebuild is in order though

Blimey that piston looks appalling...
Looks like there are no piston rings, or is it a trick of the light? |

Would be interested in a post mortem report on the oil pump. Were there any tell tales before engine seized? Not to teach you, but also check the head, cam carrier, where the camshafts run. Good luck for the rebuild. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Head is good. First thing checked.
If they were bad I’d have abandoned the rebuild and bought another engine. I plan to open the pump later so will try and get some pics There was zero warning just lost power and stopped! I would replace pump every 50 60 thou having done this. |

Hope this doesn’t hit your wallet too much. Having said that, none of this is going to be ‘cheap.’
Looks like you’re doing a grand job and once done it’ll be better than new 👍 If you’re stuck and need any local labour for any four-handed jobs just shout as I’m not too far from you. I’ve had plenty of help myself from forum members. Good luck |

Rings have been prized out and removed. The piston metal had been smeared over them holding them in |

Much appreciated. I’m working full time and putting in a few hours here and there. Once I’ve gathered all the parts it will be full steam ahead. |

I wonder if the 2.4 oil pump is a direct fit to the 2.2. The 2.2 has a variable flow vane pump, and the vanes are prone to breaking up. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I have no idea. I have relied on the knowledge of Lymm engine components to supply all the rebuild parts. Never used them before but questions have been answered and knowledge of what is needed has been spot on.

Oil pump post mortem shows catastrophic failure. The casting that holds the vanes has split in two resulting in zero oil pressure

Yup, that's had it. No amount of spit and polish is going to get that working again.
Glad the fault is obvious |

Thank you for the pics from the pump. That takes my confidence away.
I came across this page: https://ssch.com.au/oil-pump-upgrade-2-2-and-3-2-ranger-bt-50/ Hence my earlier comment about if the pump is identical to the 2.4. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
