Given that the part number appears to be a spare wheel carrier, I have to wonder why there is a "use by" date on the label.

My Defender is manufactured in the time period that is stated in the EU alert Shocked . No I am not shocked, I already know it.
The vin number is also included in the list shared by Will from LRWorkshop (although I cannot use that info as it is not official).
My vin number is between vins that were recalled in Australia (mine is 90 with Heavy Duty suspension) - that is official.

With this information, I paid a friendly visit to my local JLR authorized dealer. When I showed them print out of the alert, they went like this: Shocked , but the shock was more from them not knowing about it, rather than shocked on how to go about hiding something. Before even the discussion could start, they printed out the TOPIx information with my vin number showing that there were no recalls. I was not surprised, as I already checked TOPIx.
They kept saying your vehicle is not affected. I asked them to explain how my vin number falls exactly in between 2 similar vehicles that were recalled in Australia. They said you are lucky Laughing
Clearly they have no idea how manufacturing works...

On advise by dear Payney1000, I asked for a letter, black on white to confirm that my axle is not defective, and I can safely use my Defender on the road. They refused, but offered that they would do a 2hr vehicle inspection at my own cost of 150 euro to check my Defender. I told them that it is insane that to check an axle weld would take 2hr. I had already omitted that they would take it for X ray inspection. For the time being I have not agreed that I need to pay to have my vehicle inspected for everything else which is not part of the scope.

However, I have now paid a visit to my Insurer. I gave my insurance the documentations and what the service manager at JLR has stated. The insurance knows they are liable for third party. And driving and loosing control of a 1850kg vehicle at 60km/hr can become nasty in very busy roads. The insurance promised to followup on this.

You’re correct it’s that time, media should be informed. Sadly I was going to go down this route, but due to an open high court case with Landrover I ve been advices for me not to go to the media personally.

But that does not stop anyone else.

I have a contact that helped me at the start before the court stuff started. He has done many reports on Landrover. Tom Hussey from the Sun newspaper. Landrover media do not like the sun 👍😊 he pushed some touchy buttons at JLR.

By all means someone go for it . I just personally cannot at the moment.

I think every owner should be aware. Plus if i was aware of this it would also put me off buy a new landrover and parting with my cash. Because if they can hide something this bad, clearly there is more.

I am afraid I hit 2 dead ends.
Insurance did not care.
I contacted the local consumers affair authority, and gave them all the information, and they could not help. Their advise was to speak to a lawyer Neutral 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

The sad thing is that if someone suffered this failure and as a result crashed into a line of kids waiting at a bus stop or something similarly horrific, everyone would care and Landrover would be called to account.

The difference between a near-miss and a total disaster is just luck and timing.

Indeed. For that reason if I had an affected vehicle I’d just buy another axle casing for not much money and spend a few hours swapping things over. Then you’ve got peace of mind.

If you drive a vehicle that you know to be potentially defective and you have an accident that is solely caused by that defect, does that make you liable and voids your insurance? Just a thought.

I would like to pursue further, but I am unsure if I have the time, or the energy to do it. It is not for myself, as I already have an axle standing by to be replaced. It is just for the safety of others... and for the point. I am afraid that there are a lot of Defender owners affected by this that are not even aware. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
