Hi All,
The axel casing on my 2011 defender has cracked through the sub-standard weld. It started with a weep some time ago. A few weeks back I noticed the front left wheel was leaning in. I had a quick look and couldn't see anything obvious. Then I noticed the steering wheel was off centre so on further inspection I saw the Axel flange was resting on the "SAFETY BRACKET" and the weld had opened up. The car was still driving relatively well. Had I not noticed the wheel leaning I'd still be driving it.

At the moment in Australia the recent recall only covers selected vehicles and mine isn't included. My local garage(who has always been very good) contacted landrover and landrover have offered to cover/discount about 1/3rd of the repair. I'm not satisfied with that. I have contacted landrover in Australia and will see what progresses. It's very disappointing the way this is being handled.

Hi Pat-eg, welcome to the forum.

If your car is not covered by the current Aus recall you could contact the regulator for the recall which in this case is the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts and let them know your situation. The recall should be expanded to cover all possibly affected vehicles as seems to be happening in the EU/UK.

It still works for Germany, but not for GB. Have you tried to login and check there?

Selected Germany and just got a different blocking message:

I was rather hoping to see "no outstanding actions" or indeed details of this recall if my vehicle is included.

It's still not clear whether the EU recall includes ALL vehicles within the production range or rather just selected vehicles identified by chassis number ranges.

Maybe JLR only gave a selected number of vehicles due for remediation. If the EU is getting serious on this JLR might be wishing they had dealt with this properly at the beginning. This action by the EU is bound to strengthen someone's case if they are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident due to this issue.
I think the lights are burning long into the night at Solihull and TATA HQ as they scramble how to deal with this. The only way to resolve this to the satisfaction of the EU would be to replace the axle casings. I do not know if it is feasible to redo the welds on existing axle casings properly. If they do decide to either replace the axle casings or redo the welds would you trust a maindealer to carry out either of these? I wouldn't as they don't do anything like that.
My 2011 2.4 had the magic brackets fitted so I am obviously on the list. If I get a notification of impending action I will stick it up here. Fair play to "Payney1000" for being dogged enough to persist in this David versus Goliath affair. It is due to his actions that the French took this up with the EU. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Who has access to Topix to obtain the N706 recall document?

Based on the EU recall's production dates, and assuming it affects all variants, the VIN ranges would be these:

BA820528 - BA826097
BA400000 - BA412050
CA412051 - CA427758
DA427759 - DA440736

About 45,000 vehicles built, with at least 70% in Europe as a whole and approx 16,000 for the UK.

It's sad that it's come to this LR Workshop

I guess I am wondering what JLRs fine would be for non-compliance? I have trouble imagining them replacing even a single axle casing... Roaming around 🇳🇴🇨🇭

Assuming it affects all variants, or indeed complete VIN ranges. That's the big question at the moment.

The other big question is what the recall action. Somebody must be able to view N706...anyone?
