Lower steering shaft
Going to be replacing the steering box this week due to leaks.

Trying to undo remove the lower steering shaft but am stumped by how it is fixed.

You can just about see from these photos the tip of the funny shaped head bolt that holds the two shafts together between the universal joints.

Any idea how to remove this bolt? I understand that once that is off I can slide the plate off the shaft.

Or do I need to remove both of the universal joints?

Would appreciate some help from those who have done this before please.

No need to mess with the sliding joint....just remove the pinch-bolts on the universal joints and there's enough movement on the splines to remove the shaft

As Above. To make it easier make sure you wire brush the spline well before trying to move the UJs along them. Some light oil is a good idea too.

I think those weird bolts are shear type ones, so if you have a front end impact, the whole shaft doesn't come up into the cab and give you a steering wheel shaped face.
Older shafts had a huge rubber/metal double C type thing.

That makes sense diesel_jim.

I had watched a YouTube video by Rimmer Bros and he took the shaft apart by undoing a bolt. The defender he was working on was one year younger than mine so assumed it would be the same.

Going to give it a go tomorrow

Canada 2000 Defender 110 Td5 XS CSW Epsom Green
Changed mine last year… undo the top and bottom u-joint pinch bolts when they are loose slide the shaft down towards the bottom and pull out the top u-joint then the bottom. Thumbs Up

You may need to tap the shaft down to loosen it to slide it. Those are shear bolts and cannot be undone BTW

Thanks to everyone who responded.

Got the box off. Can't believe it was that heavy!

Brought a little 12v pump to siphon the PAS fluid out but that didn't work so resorted to manual siphon and then making a puddle on the garage floor.

Plan is now to send it to Steering Specialists Ltd to get it reconditioned.

Any one had any dealings with them?
