Puma Instrument Cluster and Mileage
Hi all

I am in the process of doing the Ultragauge and Checktemp II mod, following others’ excellent posts and instructions on this forum. Also took the opportunity to put some new dials in.

Because I was too chicken to start cutting my own instrument cluster, I bought a second hand one off eBay, and was planning to put the old one into storage in case I ever needed it.

On trying to fit the modified cluster this afternoon, everything is fine - the new cluster, UG and Checktemp both work great. However, whilst I thought the mileage would be stored in my ECU and the new cluster would display it, unfortunately it is showing the donor car’s mileage which is 40k less than mine.

I’ve reinstated the original cluster for now, but does anyone know how I get the donor one corrected (upwards!)

um, it‘s not supposed to be easy Whistle
Also AFAIK the instrument cluster is part of the immobiliser system. Again, not supposed to be easy to manipulate. I‘d be surprised if your Puma will run with that other cluster.

Hi macfrank

It starts and runs fine, just displaying the donor car’s mileage. It would seem more logical to tie the mileage into the ECU, as the cluster is an easy swap, and the clusters themselves must pack up from time to time.

That‘s what I meant. So how can the engine run with a different unit? :-/

According to Pete Bell at BAS the Instrument pack is the master store for the VIN as part of the CCF

Top of the page, from Pete you can see a post from him, the point to note is this statement.

“For reference and info... The vin from the instrument pack is transmitted on the CAN nework to the engine ecu and diag port, the engine ecu does not output a vin nunber diagosticlly its self and so only reports/mirrors what is ever inside the instruemnt pack its self in its own way. Even sending an 8 byte request command on CAN addressed directly to the engine ecu on network address 0XE0 command of 03 22 F1 90 00 00 00 00 to request to read VIN will still only ever report the vin seen on the CAN network thats outputted by the instrument pack it self and nothing more. ”

It would be interesting to know if the correct VIN is also showing with the new instrument pack or whether the donor vehicles vin is now showing.

Do we conclude from this that is actually almost as easy to clone a Puma as it is to steal it, just fit the VIN plate and binnacle from another vehicle? Shocking! Shocked

I've converted my td5 interior to full Puma spec including the dashboard and instrument cluster, using some of the wizardry offered by Martin who runs this forum.

I bought a used Puma instrument cluster from ebay, bought a new perspex cover for it and then used digidash who are local to me to set the mileage in the Puma unit to exactly the same as in my original.

If you search for mileage correction you will find someone to do it. Clearly these services can be abused and I'm not advocating them, but it got me the result I wanted

A long way of saying the mileage is definitely stored in the instrument cluster and you can change it if you want!

Of course my car is a TD5 so maybe the Puma immobiliser etc makes it more complicated!

Thanks for all the replies. I will take a look at mileage correction but given the interaction with the immobiliser and VIN I may just dismantle the original cluster and treat the first one as a test run!

I think the CCF , including immobilisation codes, may be stored in the ECM and instrument cluster and shared between them via the HS CAN bus, however they are only used in the ECM. The Alarm module, be it the 10AS or later ALM, communicates directly with the ECM via a separate dedicated serial bus. This bus goes via the instrument cluster but the instrument cluster does not participate in the conversation.
