Defender bonnet release cable - type and how long
I am looking to replace my bonnet release cable and from what I see on net, the britpart one doesn't have a great reputation.

From one of the videos from Britannica Restorations, Mike uses a different cable - something like an Isuzu engine stop cable. I have searched for thar particular one but can't see it, but it looks like there are many alternatives of one sort or another. Some of these are tractor engine stop cables, so I presume a bit stronger than the Britpart unit!

So, to look for a viable alternative I need to know the length of the Defender bonnet release cable - do any of you folks have one to hand that you could measure?

Or, have any of you actually used a good alternative that you can share details of?

Obviously, if you have found a decent Defender bonnet cable then please share the details as I can only really see the Britpart one.

Thanks in advance.

Mick

I bought a britpart one, it is not a critical part, so I thought how bad can it be? But once received, I found how utter rubbish it is. So I will be putting the original cable back it. It only has a small break on the outer cable, which I will cover with a bit of heat shrink.

I will measure the original cable (1988) this evening. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Many thanks Dinnu.

My thoughts were for something like. As it's an engine stop cable it would be used every time the truck is used, so I presume more hardy than the Britpart bonnet release. I would probably just remove the "pull to stop" engraving via sanding it off etc. I don't really think I need to add a bonnet release logo! There are different lengths available so hopefully I can get one of a suitable length without altering.

Let me know if the uploaded pictures are not clear. There could be a small error as I was careful with my cable as would like to re use it.

No problem. It is also good to occasionally shift through all the scattered parts, then I refresh the memory of where everything is 😂

Just to note that there is no marking on the lever.

There is a small metal P clip, if I remember correctly it goes under one screw of the turret cover on the inner mudguard. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Can't remember exactly what I did, but after buying my defender with a near seized bonnet cable I did swap some of the parts with bits from my pedal bike spares. Not sure if I replaced the cable inner or outer (I suspect the outer) but after looking at the cable I definitely thought 'this looks familiar ' and hey presto, a few cheap bits and a bit of grease/oil and now several years later I still have a perfectly functioning bonnet release......
