engine oil Castrol 10w40, but I buy this from a farm supplier in 20ltr drums works out cheaper gearbox R380 I use westway MTF 94 transfers and diffs comma EP80/90 hope this helps 2016 Discovery 4 1989 90 CSW V8 (fully rebuilt and running like a dream) 1996 defender tray back fully rebuilt/loaded for challenge events |

It's a rudimentary engine. It'll benefit more from more frequent oil changes than any fancy oil.

Hi all,
Looking through the stack of invoices I received when I purchased my 300tdi last year, I noticed that 5w30C3 fully synthetic was used instead of 10w40 which was the case with previous services. May I know if any harm could come to the 300tdi engine with the continued use of 5w30 instead of 10w40? Reason I ask is because my Puma uses 5w30 and it just saves me from keeping two different types of engine oil for top-ups. Many thanks! It should not do any harm. The trouble is keeping it in! It is very fine and your engine was not designed for such fine oil. You were charged a lot more for oil than you needed to pay. 10W-40 semi synthetic is as fancy as this engine needs.
I remember my series 111 was in getting work done on it so I asked them to do an oil and filter change while it was up on the ramp. They used 5W-30! Well it was coming out of every seal it could find. Even when I changed it with 15W-40 mineral oil it took a while to seal up. Also the oil pressure light was coming on a lot. If you stuck for topping up the tdi you could use the 5W-30 as it will be in relatively small amounts. The Puma on the other hand must have the 5W-30. Just drain it and refill. Do the filter aswell as that holds oil. You could lie underneath and see where the leak is. It could be a sump plug or bung that needs changed, you will see oil around this if it is needing to be changed but you will have to drain the oil to do it. There were two sizes of drain plug or bung fitted to the 300 tdi. Earlier ones took the large one or same as the 200 tdi where as later ones took the smaller one fitted o the Td5 engine. My daughter's 300 tdi is one of the last from 1998/99 and it takes the smaller bung

Yep MAHLE is a good filter which I use myself. It could be just down to the very fine 5W-30. You could remove the filter, clean the mating surface and smear the rubber sealing ring with some fresh oil, then refit it. Put a container underneath to catch what ever oil comes out. If you are worried about the filter you could change it but Mahle are a decent filter. There are good instructions in your hand book about this . It is hand tightened. When I bought my 2006 300Tdi, second hand in 2012, it ran on 5W30. It also stated so in my owners manual. As here in sun South Africa it gets a bit hotter than up in Europe, I decided to go to 5W40. I have no problems and here's a picture of my lifters just to Bragg a bit. Click image to enlarge |

I thought it was normal to run the thinner viscosity oils in colder climates to prevent it getting too thick in the low temps?
The 3340 filter is the one you want, I buy genuine as it is a minor cost hike over second source variants and worth piece of mind rather than trying to guess who makes decent filters or not! If your filter is leaking try nipping it up a bit by turning it by hand before resorting to removing it. It has a big old seal on it and I would be surprised if a correctly tightened filter is sufficiently compromised to give a visible leak. |

Q1 - The plug is replaced each time the oil is replaced in the Puma, is this good practice with the 300tdi as well? Q2 - Any idea why the fuel filter was moved from the engine bay area in the 300tdi, to the off-side rear wheel area in the Puma?
